Electric Winch?

Hi Surfers,

I run a 2nd Gen 3.0Td, have done for four trouble free years - great trucks! Anyway I tow a car transporter trailer with my track car (Sierra Cosworth 1300kgs). The trailer is currently fitted with a 2 tonne hand winch which works well whenever I need to use it for picking up none runners etc but as I am getting older, it feels like my heart is going to explode by the time I have finished winching!

I have been looking at the 12v electric winches and just wondered how they connect up to the truck for power. My Surf has twin electics on the towbar but I have only ever used the normal socket for the lights and not too sure what the other one is for, maybe some kind of caravan power?

I realise recovery trucks use them but obviously they are fixed to the bed.How would I connect up with the winch fitted on the trailer?

yeah, to other socket is for aux power for caravans.

i wouldn't want to run a winch through any normal trailer socket connection.

you need something a fork truck battery plug and socket, like this....

these plugs are standard fit on recovery trucks,and are very good,but have to be looked after,light smear of grease and always put the cover back on as they corrode,and run suitable cable(should say in handbokk for winch)

I install a fair few anchor winches & bow thrusters during the course of my work - these use motors with a similar current draw to automotive winches. One of the problems you will encounter is getting 12V from the front of the Surf to the back, without suffering a significant voltage drop. You would need some heafty battery cable & plug /socket, as suggested to overcome this.
Generally heavy current draw @ 12V down long cable runs is not a good idea.
Could you not mount the battery in a box next to the winch, on the trailer & use the aux power feed to charge the battery via a split charge relay.
I can give you details on 'how to' if you wanted to go down this route.

Fantastic! Sorry for the slow reply, excuse my working away and VERY occasional internet use. This looks just like what I am after. I`ll get the parts ordered.
