My old truck, a 3.0TD SSR-V Auto did this all the time. No coolant loss and carried on fine until I sold it.

If it isn't losing coolant you have no problem. Are you sure its not just the condensation burning off in the cold weather?

After having looked at a few more threads, I think its going to be two or three small problems that when combined gives the symptoms/impression its a cracked head..
It is loosing water but not a great amount at all, I think it a small leak somewhere around the bulk head, possibly even to do with the heater matrix ( I don't know if this is a common fault) this would also account for the smell of burning coolant.
The theads on replacing glow plugs were interesting, and since I have been leaving the glow plugs to warm up for 5 seconds extra after the glow plug light has gone out, there is hardly any smoke on start up, and what smoke there is could maybe put down to moisture in the exhaust..
I think the best thing I can do is change the glow plugs and look for leaks else where.. Again, are there any weak points in the cooling system where small leaks tend to occur???
As always any input would be much appreciated.
Heh, If it turns out only to be a set of glow plugs and a small leak and not the head, It will be the best christmas present i'm going to get...!
The only thing that still bothers me, is why did I see the small bubbles in the expansion tank??
