Cooling questions

Hi all, a couple of newbie questions about the 3.0 cooling system.

1. What's the difference between red and blue anti-freeze, and which should I use?
2. Will running on pure water, ideally for short periods, damage the system other than through freezing? (asking this for reference, not cos I plan to)
3. Is it possible to drain the expansion tank?

Finally, I've got the 1KZ-TE Engine Repair Manual, but it doesn't have a schematic diagram of the whole cooling system. Does anyone have one?

I know you can't mix the blue and red coolant.So if you got red then fill with red and vice versa with the blue,or totally flish the cooling system to put the other colour in.
Ive had just water in mine for a good year now and its been ok.
just take the expansion tank out and empty it

Thanks Richard. Done a bit more reading and have ordered new red coolant from Roughtrax, since what came out was muddy brown... Also stat and rad cap as seems to be the usual trick when changing coolant.

Anyone any ideas on where to find a complete cooling diagram?

Flush the system thoroughly back and forth several times if the coolant appeared muddy. Make sure all the heater controls are set to full heat as well so that you flush the matrixes too. Cap and 'stat definitely want doing whilst you're at it. Also, keep your old cap in the Surf as a backup just incase you ever have a problem with the new one.

Thanks for reply. Spares all on their way now. Wanting to know how the system drains the expansion tank back into the main coolant loop, also how the heating matrices are plumbed in?

As the engine cools a vacuum is created and coolant returns from expansion tank to engine via the small one way valve in the centre bottom of radiator cap. It exits the engine via the bottom of cap as pressure compresses the spring, through the outlet.
