Cruise Control problem

i have a 1994 l plate 3tlr ssrg
now when i put the cruise control button on green light lights up fine
but then some times when i hit the button to cruise at designated speed the green cruise light flashes then goes out and wont work
but most of time its fine 7/10 times any ideas??

i would take the steering wheel off and check the copper rings on the underside,make sure they are clean and in good condition,check the contactor and smear a bit of vaseline on the rings.
