  • Truck not engaging 4WD

My issue relates to the failure of my 3rd gen surf (3.0TD auto) to engage 4wd. The dash lights flash continously(and have done for the past year) but it does not go in to 4wd. The car has been checked by an auto box specialist who thought the 4wd computer controller might be to blame. This has been replaced but the problem remains. They now think it may be a wiring problem somewhere between the controller and the solenoids. Does anyone have any ideas where would be best to start? The solenoids have been checked and are all thought to be ok and the the sliding mechanism to engage 4wd work . Thanks

If the sliding yoke on the diff has been checked and has been found to be working then the light on the dash should have stopped flashing.
Have you driven with the 4wd button pressed in to see if it engages? It rarely engages while stationary.

If everything electrical checks out OK then it's a mechanical problem with the transfer case or the selector motor on the T/case.

Mine rarely engages if moving, but will however engage every time when staionary.

Hi - thanks for your thoughts. The car is currently in 2wd and will not enagage 4wd - the dash lights flash like a Xmas tree telling me it wants to engage - but never does. The auto box specialist think it could be a damaged wire either running to or from the computer controller - but this would be a nightmare to track down as there are so many. Are there any common faults such as poor earths etc that would be worth checking (but I would have thought the specialists would have checked these already). Failing that any ideas on any hi lux specialist who might be able to check it out.

          Cheers

Mine has had the same problem for a year.
I think my problem in at the transfer box area.
Has anyone stripped one of there or have any pictures of the transfer box shift motor?
I think it would be a good idea to put our collective knowlage of this problem together.
For my part i attach pictures of the front diff shift forks. I took mine off and checked it but all looked fine.

Cheers for you responses and sorry for the delay in getting back on. I 'll check the contacts on the transfer actuator motor and let you know the results - although I would have thought that the gear box specialists would have checked this out. The specialists said that the innards of the tranfer box appear to be fine and the chain is in good order. These guys appear to know their onions but this has them baffled. By way of history the problem started with the car jolting violently intermittently when being driven and it had been feared that the it could be a chain/gear probelm ie very expensive. The 4 WD computer controller was replaced with a 2nd hand unit and this stopped the jolting but the lights still kept flashing. I new unit was installed (£170) and the lights still kept flashing. It sounds like your problem Patzx12 is identical to this. I have feeling it is linked in some way to this computer.
