  • Another cracked head.

The usual symptoms, gauge into the red water boiling out.
when cool and low on water i could see exhaust fumes coming out of the rad.
The truck is an immaculate 96 3rd gen intercooled 150.000km
Took off the head it looked perfect, sent it for pressure test and it is cracked.
I have had 3, 3.0L surfs and each one has cracked a head.
It should be 100% once i fit a new genuine head.
I hear mention of cracked blocks but how do you check for this?

    bummer...
but what caused the engine to overheat and crack the head in first place - something must be dodgy in cooling system to cause the failure?

did mine on a run up the M40 not watching the temp when I knew I had a weepy rad. I'll pay more attention in future.
New head & rad, all is good now & with all the new steering components fitted as a result of the steering recall she feels like a new beast - top marks to Coxon in Henley for their work on this.
Still trying for 400 miles from a tank - anyone managed that from a 3ltr -what are the chances?!!!

It seems the 3.0ltr's are starting to go the same way as the 2.4's.

Surely this must be a maufacturing defect, (in some cases) and therefore there should be some kind of recourse via toyota.

These type of components (blocks and heads) should carry a liftime warranty against manufacturing or material defects.

        Still working for the man!

any head can go, and these are not new cars mine is 15 years old now, you just have to make sure that you look after it, i change my coolent every year i know some who do this every six months. There have been cases of poor head/engine design lokk at the junk lander Landrover would not admit that there was and is a problem they would replace some engines if the car was still in its warrenty and only then if it had a full landrover service history.

Another 3.0L near me has went the same way last week! I personally think Toyota have boobed! I have had many cars etc in me life and I have never worried about over heating like I have had with the surf, no matter how old the car/truck is.Thankfully it has never happened to me, uprated head I think

However, still think it's a great truck, I'm not being neg & sh't just venting my thoughts through this wonderful forum...

Land Rover do heaps wrong for sure but Mr Toyota can't get it right all the time

seems to be a general thing with toyota cars in general, the mkiii supras were notorious for it.

                    Running without Coolant

I've recently replaced the Radiator, and just put water in to see if there were any leaks.
Will it do any damage to run without coolant for a few days? Is it worth paying for Toyota coolant to avoid head problems?
Did the Surf put the Toy in Toyota?

My Surf was never abused and properly serviced. I have had head gaskets go on cars but never experienced cracking problems.
I think all the old Surfs will crack a head sooner or later 2.4 or 3.0
