A noise has developed on my 3rd gen.It starts when the engine reaches just below 2,500rpm and can only be described as a "light rapid rattle",this noise is definately revs related as it gets faster the higher the revs get,could it be something to do with the turbo?Maybe a blown turbo manifold gasket?Hope someone can shed some light,the vehicle is still under warranty(just).Cheers.

Depends how organised you are. The actual job takes an hour BUT you need the shim removal tool, feeler gauges, and the bit that takes the time - new shims with the correct thickness. (Order from Toyota; wait a week or so; try shims; order another couple of shims, wait etc etc)

Had the bonnet up this morning,noticed black residue around the port nearest the front on the right hand side of engine block(turbo manifold?)and what looks like a fine spray over the radiator fan cover,looks like a blown gasket to me,but I am NO expert.Would this make that sort of noise(very light rapid rattle@2,400rpm or above)?Powered by ????

I'd get the manifold off and check, if it is gone then get a new gasket, check the face of the manifold for flatness and if OK then put the new gasket on with some hermetite.
Hopefully will make a big difference.

I'd get the manifold off and check, if it is gone then get a new gasket, check the face of the manifold for flatness and if OK then put the new gasket on with some hermetite.
Hopefully will make a big difference.

I would do it as soon as possible though if this is the problem, if the leak is bad you may find that you burn the face of the head where it meets the inlet manifold or the manifold itself. I have seen them so bad that resurfacing of them would need to be too radical to be feasible.
