  • Engine check light on briefly - using WVO mix

I’m running a reasonably high percentage of WVO at the mo (around 80% WVO, 10% diesel 10% petrol + dash of veggieboost cetane enhancer) and its been running fine like this for at least a couple of months. I have a heat exchanger fitted after the fuel filter so although it can miss a bit when completely cold, as soon as its warm its fine and doesn’t miss a beat.

As its pretty cheap to run it like this I thought I would try turning overdrive off and ECT on whilst on a 100mile run which made everything a bit smoother. About 10 minutes after doing this and going about 65 I went to overtake a caravan up a very slight incline. As I was overtaking I completely lost power, had to pull back into the inside lane and the engine check light came on. I noticed that for the first time ever the temp had gone a couple of millimetres on from where it has always stayed at (around midway on the gauge)

Once I slowed down to about 55 for a bit the check light went off and after a few minutes the temp went back to normal. Oil pressure was a bit low but checked level and all fine.

Carried on the journey (another 30 miles on then around 100 back) and all fine

What is likely to have caused it?

    1) Veg being too thick (despite petrol and Heat exchanger) to be able to cope with that amount of load
    2) Water in veg (would be surprised as its dewatered and hot pan tested)
    3) Diesel or petrol too old or contaminated with water? (Both the diesel and petrol I’m using up were in Jerry cans I found in the garden that I think were filled about 10 years ago)
    4) Vacuum hose issues (not I’m slipping into ‘I don’t really know what I’m talking about’ territory)

    NB
It’s a 3l with a changed head and has never overheated in the time I have owned it
Fuel filter changed by the numpties at Toyota last week and filled with redex and wellied for a bit

Anything worth worrying about or running diagnostics?

Don't think so. I'll try and have a listen later.

        Slightly clogged fuel filter?

You were demanding high fuel flow at the time. Also, it's not unusual for the temp to creep up slightly when accelerating hard up hill, even on a 3.0. Mine used to, but doesn't since fitting the trans cooler.

          .
I wondered that, even though toyota replaced it recently with a Toy one. Having said that, I think I had p1ssed them off so much by that point that it wouldn't surprise me if they had cr@pped in it before fitting
