  • Turbo fault 14

Got a loss of power and blue smoke, Changed the fuel filter, Air filter, problem stayed and seems to be getting worse with smokey start and also when high revs reached if it manages high revs.
Checked the Diagnostic faults after battery was disconnected for a half hour it came up with single flash then four flashes then long break then repeats I took this as fault 14 Turbo problems. How much is a 1996 2nd hand turbo likely to cost or get serviced ?

Code 14 has nothing to do with the turbo. It is a fault with the fuel pump Timer Control Vale or something associated with this circuit or clogged fuel filter or could even be the timing is out because the belt has skipped a tooth or two because it is failing.

2.4's just have 1 to 14 or what ever, 3.0's use generaic OBD codes that are the same across the toyota range.

YEP looks like Im wrong, the truck is now at local garage to be diagnosed on there machine and get sorted. If its the pump then could be exspensive I think.
Cheers for the input, how much is a recon pump likely to cost ? I didnt see any leaks or oil on the housing maybe something electrical I hope.

Thanks for the link to engine manual.
Might save me a few quid if the garage owner starts giving me a fairy story.

You should be able to just replace the timer valve, but.....Toyota always tell you replace the whole pump at the dealer computers, you may to need to help them find the part number form a EPC online.

If you can't find one, a used pump is probably your cheapest bet.

How much is a timing valve and is it easy to fit?

Very expensive. About AU$600 I think I saw somewhere on the Aussie forum. They are fairly easy to fit. Remember though, that other things can cause this fault code, so check the belt, timing, connections etc before buying one.

I paid $392.24 AUST for one from Toyota in December 2007, and it was definitely not easy to replace - a very tough job, but manageable. The car needs to be lifted up and access made through the wheel well, LHS. I reckon that most problems that come up as Code 14 are not because of the Timer Control Valve (Part No. T23010-67030). I have seen a few people go to all that expense and find the problem was still there. In fact, with mine, the valve only fixed one small problem and the light still illuminated and the code was still there. A new fuel line that comes from the end of the rigid metal line to the fuel filter was the main culprit - it was sucking air.

Just went to see how the garage had got on diagnosing the problems with my truck, He had it 3 days and tells me today that he don't work on imports or Bio powered cars, Foo-kin idiot. When I took it in he commented on how he would feel hungry working on it because of the smell of Bio and told me its basically the same as a Colorado.
So got it home drained the tank, put 20ltrs fresh derv and disconnected the heat exchanger still got no joy, checked that the timing belt and sprokets lined up ok, checked fuel hoses for wear and fit at terminals all ok,Checked the pump lines up with its marking ok,Checked the ecd relay with ohm meter ok, Checked timing control valve and only got a reading of 2 and no clicking of solenoid, Going to recheck tomorrow before ordering a valve just to make sure I got the right terminal tested.
                          Tonyn got it in one

                          Cheers

The 1KZ-TE pump has a small filter under the fuel temperature sensor which is on the side of pump above the timer control valve. Maybe this is blocking up.

Tested the TCV again to check I had tested correctly the first time and got a reading of 10-12 ohms and also got a clisking from solenoid, Will have to try and find the filter located on the pump seems to be getting worse as the week goes on.
Going to try a few diesel specialists tomorrow after work every garage I speak to seems to avoid imports.
