  • Question on using 4wd on 2nd Gen 3.0L

    Hi there - I have a 3.0L 2nd Gen Surf.

I don't have much need or opportunity to use the 4wd normally, but in the recent weather, my usual journey to work has been quite icy and slippy on some roads. So I've been engaging the 4wd for short sections (200m max) to give me a bit of extra grip.

    Questions...

    1. Am I OK to do this on tarmac, or am I damaging my truck?

    2. Is there a top speed I should limit it to in 4wd?

    3. What is the top speed at which I can engage the 4wd?

    1. Am I OK to do this on tarmac, or am I damaging my truck?

It'll be OK as long as there are no tight corners.

    2. Is there a top speed I should limit it to in 4wd?

    50mph max.

    3. What is the top speed at which I can engage the 4wd?

    Up to 45 mph.

      and a follow up question...

once I turn the 4wd switch off and keep on driving, does it sort itself out? i.e. does the diff unwind itself then?

If you are concerned that you have wound the diff up try and get both wheels on one side onto a surface with little traction i.e. wet grass/ ice etc./ If there is any wind up the wheels will spin and unwind.

If the 4wd light wil;l not go out reverse a little way and the 4wd will disengage.
