  • Check light and rattle

Just changed the engine over on my dads surf.

Started it and the engine has a knocking noise from under the rocker cover somewhere. The noise isn’t that noticeable at idle but progressively gets worse when the revs start building up until it completely disappears at over 3k ish.

Also the engine check light is lit up, I have printed off the self diagnostic info and will have a go at this tomorrow but was just wondering in the mean time if anyone had any idea of what this could be?

The injectors have been removed and bench tested somewhere and are all fine.

The fuel pressure regulator (think that’s what it is anyway) was bent so we changed that over and it seem to make a difference the first time it was re started but it is now back to the rattle.

There is a slight miss at around 3.5k constant rpm, there is also some white smoke when it misses.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

Any experts in the South Lanarkshire area also?!

    Cheers
    Dave

Cheers fort he link, dont know how I didnt find that while searching!

So either distributer(sp) or knock sensor from that list then! Where abouts are these located?

Someone else suggested a sensor on the gearbox could be faulty, no idea on how they came up with this though!

Do you have a number for the place in kirky by chance?

A improperly shimed injector body will give a loud knocking sound.I will sound just like a big end knock.
I had that once on a Surf and discovered I had left out a shim on one of my injectors when I stripped and cleaned them.
I diagnosed it by removing the injector pipes one at a time and putting a piece of tubing and a bottle over the pipe to catch the diesel.
Then I started it up with 3 injectors connected. Luckily my faulty one was No:1

Had a look over the timing last night and all is well.

The new engine was bought as a whole item - and was running before removed - thankfully no work has been done on it at all by us.

Will have a look at what you said about the injector shims patzx12 its worth a try!

Would too much diesel being pumped into the engine produce the knock we are hearing? It def sounds like its coming from under the rocker cover.

                  Keep the ideas coming please!

I would try the diconecting the injectors one by one, you will only have to run it for a couple of minutes to find out if it has cured the knock.
I just put my injector pipe in a small bottle and fired her up.

That was one of the things we tryed over the weekend - we thought it might have air in it somewhere, didnt make much difference in any cylinder though.

Going to start changing sensors tonight and see what happens!

Anyone else got any ideas for us?!
