  • Chirping Noise.......

Ok i have read all the threads about chirping and whizzing......
Am i right in saying that the turbo kicks in at about 2000 - 2500 rpm ?
Cus after all the work i have done on my surf a chirping noise is all i want and yes i got one....sounds like you just blew a budgie up like a whoopie cusion and squeezed it whilst sticking its beak in the spokes of your sisters barbie tricycle....
New head, water pump, cam belt, tensoiner, turbo reconditioned blah blah blah also no a/c or egr any more, made plates to blank off the egr on the inlet and exhaust manifold....
All running fine and pulls like a train but between 2500 - 3000 revs i get a chirping noise that disapears at over 3500 revs.....
Only does it when moving be it light or heavy load same sound...
May have to strap the missus to the bonnet to listen a bit closer tomorrow... or find a tiny tiny person to sit under the bonnet.....
Suppose it could be turbo pressure forcing its way past the gasket where the egr valve used to be as i used the old one when fitting the blanking plate but did not think turbo pressure was that great ?? plate is 1/4 thick steel...
Oh well surfing is fun isn't it and i don't even own a wet suit.....

That would be my guess. Did all this work you had done involve removing the crankshaft pulley?

Without actually hearing it in person it would be hard to find what is causing the noise, could be a number of things.

P.S check your front grill for small birds.
If its not broke don't fix it.

Harmonic balancer is the lower crankshaft pulley yes ?
If it is never touched it, honest officer......
Have tightened belts, they have about 5mm slack in them.
Could it be that since the rebuild and me refitting and tightening the belts it has caused the balancer to start whinging as when i bought the surf and drove her home even though she lacked power, cus the turbo was kerput, there was no noise ??
Need to start some where so will check balancer tomorrow.

And i just spent the last half hour reading the threads on how to fix it.....
Think i'll go get the missus to spank some sense in to me......

Would it be wise to remove the short pipe from the turbo to the intake to see if its turbo pressure causing the problem ? Only run it for ashort time and if it is i narrowed it down to something....

Yeah, it definitely sounds like an air leak on or around the turbo. The hoses and clips may look tight but there may be a tiny split somewhere that causing the noise.

are you sure its just not the turbo doing its job and makeing the noise

Went out sunday morning and tightend me nuts in the cold morning air....then had a look at the Surf......
Checked all the bits i had put on where tight and no leaks....
Even sprayed a bit of wd40 around the manifold to look for leaks and none found....
Gave the alternator a squirt behind the pully and inside the rear of it...
Popped into local car parts place to get some new belts and the guy pointed out that it could be that someone had fitted the thinner belt that is 10mm wide and not 13mm wide thus causing the belt to sit to deep in the pulley....
Yep you geussed it i got the skinny ones on.....
BUT went for a spin to and low and behold the noise had gone.....
On the way home yep it came back....bugger
So new belts first and then check altenator, i am hoping its what the guy in the shop said that if they are to thin they cannot get out of the pulley quick enough and start to complain.....bit like me in morrisons when the missus starts reading every damn box to see the fat or sugar content...arrrggggh!
