  • Possible auto g/box problem?????

This has only started since coming back from Langdale.

When selecting Drive and releasing the hand brake it feels like the brakes are dragging, I get no forward movement till I give it some gas.

If I back off the gas the car will come to a halt again.

This never happens when selecting Reverse.

I can go into Reverse and the car pulls away without touching the gas BUT
put it straight into Drive and again it will not pull without giving it gas (I can feel it dragging by letting off the gas and then back on it)

I have jacked each corner up to see if any of the brakes are binding which they aren't.

This is an intermittent problem it don't do it all the time mainly when it's cold
Got me flumuxed as I don't have any knowledge regarding Auto boxes.

    Anyone got any ideas???????

Going to get under it tomorrow with the grease gun if it stops ****** raining.

did you clean out the rear drums after langdale, i presume yours is a 2nd gen surf. as they get contaminated when going through water & mud

3rd Gen Mark, but no I havent looked at the rear drums yet.

Braking feel's normal and it will start to roll in neutral when stopped on an incline.

Going to check the drums out tomorrow, anything I need to know when removing them??

As I said I have no auto box experience but is this not symtoms of wind up???

its a new one is this if your rear brakes are drum brakes the leading edge of the shoes may have dried mud on them but your braking would be worse.
instead of sticking when going forward

Need hand brake off (of course), remove wheel. You will see two threaded holes in the drum find two suitable bolts that fit these and simply wind them in to pull the drum off. If your lucky it may pull off without needing these.
I very much doubt its the rear drums causing this as you say it free wheels ok & only drags when in drive.
I am not sure on this one, so over to one of the others for possible causes.

Is you tickover still the same? If its low for any reason, the box won't pull.

Have you checked the fluid level?

Low tyre pressure, in 4WD still........

If all is OK, I'd change the fluid and try again.

                Tickover not changed

Will be checking the fluid level tomorrow when I give it a good greasing

                Tyre pressures ok

Not in 4WD (checked that spinning the wheels on some soft stuff)

Where is the level check for the gearbox?? (Sometimes I really wish I had a Haynes............crap they may be but point you in the right direction when your going at it blind)

                Thx 4 the reply's

My 2nd gen 3.0 does this as well when it is cold, once the 'box is in a drive gear and the oil has got round it it's fine. It's also worse in forward gears, not so much binding as rev's and no go in my case.

My 'box has been rebuilt so I assume that it is not a problem.

                  Rich.

Should be another dipstick, usually near the bulkhead.

Remember to leave the engine running when checking the level and shift the transmission lever thro' all positions b4 checking the level!

Should read between marks at the higher(hot) range of marks on the dipstick.

Found it, checked it, all ok but will be renewing the oil soon.

What I did find was a lot of gung in one of the rear drums, seemed to be real sticky and all over the leading edge of the shoe.

Thinking this may be part of the problem as I said it was worse when cold, got me thinking that this gunk was solidifying in the drum when left to cool and when driven was loosening up allowing me to roll when in neutral, making me thing it wasn't the brakes.

Cleaned it up and all seemed well...............still going to change the auto box oil, will see how it goes.

if you are changing the gearbox oil you should read this http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dorothy...bemx/p_m20.htm dropping the oil out the box doesnt work as most of it is in the torque converter, however if it is still nice and clean and not burnt i would leave it as it is
