  • steering rattle and ecu check connector

Hi - I''m looking for help with 2 problems.

    1. I have a pronounced rattle in the steering column. Everything below the power steering box has been replaced so it's nothing down there. If you stick your hand under the dash and grab the column you can move it noticeably from side to side and hear it knocking against something. Is there some kind of collar or bearing that should hold it in place. I took off the plastic casing but didn't fancy going in any further until I had more info. I have searched the forum but have found no answers.

    2. The check engine warning light is on. I thought I'd check the ECU as described in the service manual but can't find the check connector. It doesn't seem to be under the bonnet or in either of the side walls inside by the footwells. i have a 1995 3litre 4runner left hand drive with the 1KZ-TE engine. I am attaching a photo of the engine in case that helps!

Thanks very much for any help.

the rattle may be the column where it goes thru the bulkhead if the rubber grommit has come out.
Do a search for fault codes and you will find full instructions how to get them and what the problem is

      Thanks for your reply.

      I'll check the gromet.

Re: fault codes - I can't find where the connector is physically on the car to check them! That's my problem.

I can't see it in the pic but its normally a small grey box with diagnostics on it near the glow plug relay.

No, nothing there, and no suspicious wires laying around. I presume a LHD 4Runner can have a different layout than a RHD Surf - that's probably the problem.

Some 1995 Toyotas have been found to be OBII compliant, although I don't know if yours is one. (The Diagnostic system changed from OBI to OBII formally in 1996) If so, there will be a Diagnostic Connector fitted under the Instrument Panel, between the Steering Column and the Centre Console. It should be a white fitting where an OBII 'probe' can be inserted to get the codes. An auto electrician should be able to find it if you still are having difficulties. If not OBII, then the electrician should also be able find the OBI connection. Good luck.
