Spare Wheel Carrier Problem

Hi guys just wondering if anyone knows what the possable causes are for my spare wheel carrier suddenly becoming very heavy when trying to swing it open?
I've just had a look and it seems theres a small hole where the hinge is as if you could squirt grease into it! If anyone else has had this problem then any info would be greatful cheers Andy ps its a gen 3

The grease that is in there will have solidified over the years. ( any solvents/light ends will have evaporated). The cure is to skoosh some magic mist ( WD40 or releasing oil) into the wee holes and then work the carrier back and forth. You may have to repeat this a number of times over a few days to get the result you want. After getting that result you can syringe some light grease into the wee holes or you can do nothing other than an occasional WD 40 skoosh.
