Faulty 4wd engagement.

Finally had a problem with my 3rd Gen 3.0TD Intercooled Surf.
Disco lights are flashing all the time.
when I depress the switch they go off and then back on again, flashing.
Solinoid clicks underneath.
When I try to engage the 4wd on the move at about 30mph I got a loud mechanical clunk from under the car.
Any ideas or suggestiond appreciated.

Do the lights go off after you hear the transfer engage (the clonk from underneath)

I read on here somewhere about the drive belt to the alternator, check to see if that is tight and is making enough vacuum in the brake servo (that provides the vaccum to the 4WD system) - if it's taking a while to get the 4WD to come on, I'd check this first...

Hi the noise is a lot more than a clunk, it sounds quite nasty. i have it jacked up but i did not get a chance to look at it yet.
I will check everything out and do a bit of learning about the system.
Does anyone have a schematic of the 4wd system.
