  • Power Steering Leak

The wife's 3.0TD has developed a leak on the power steering system, at first i thought it was downt to a loose pipe as i had to change one. So have tightened it up, but still loosing fluid.
Now tonight i topped up the fluid and got the wife to turn the steering lock to lock to see if i could spot the leak, within a couple of minutes the fluid had dissappeared but i couldn't see any leaks.

I know the 3.0 aren't belt driven, so am assuming they are driven by the crank or something of that nature, is it possible for the pump to leak and pump the PSF into the engine and mix with the oil, as i could swear the oil levels rising?

The 3.0 PS Pump is on the nearside bottom of the engine and must be driven of the crank somehow, not sure how till i get it apart. But was hopeing somebody might have more of an idea than me.

the power steering pump isn't actually belt driven but via cogs inside.
There are some bolts on the front of the pump you need to undo and then the front half pulls off then you need to release the back of the pump by undoing a couple of bolts i think it is.i will be taking the pump out of my breaker in a couple of days so i will give full details then.
Carefull when seperating the pump as you may get oil spillage

You learn something new every day. I wasn't taking the pi$$ by the way, I've never paid any heed to the 3.0L engines.

Cheers Richard, I had a spare one here on the old bottom end that I replaced. You can just release the back by undoing two 14mm nuts it then slides off.
I'm going to have to drop the engine oil anyway as its now contaminated with PSF. Will let everyone know if this cures my leak.

Just thought i would pop an update on this, i fitted a new Power steering pump and this cured the leak and the rising engine oil levels.
