  • 3rd gen 4x4 won't engage

    Hi everyone,

New to site, checked numerous threads and couldn't find anything suitable re 3rd gen, so I apolgise if this has cropped up too many times before.

Got 3rd gen with only 70k miles and been well looked after, good history, inc some Toyota bills. 4wd won't engage when 4wd button is selected, nothing on dash and front wheels don't join in. Also is not happening if I manually put it in 4H. It drives in 4L but guess only 2wd too.

I know I'll have to get someone to look at it, but I wonder how easy it'd be to 1) find a decent garage near Bracknell Berkshire who know surfs (did I hear of a surf specialist in basingstoke?), and 2) Is there a sensible order of checking simpler things first before worrying about big nasty surprises in the wallet area??

Many thanks for any help you can offer,

Many thanks for that, I'll be on to them in the morning.

I'm curious, what's a lexurf? Sounds interesting. If a surf with v8 in, then I'm jealous, lol.

That's a nice truck indeed. Looks like the engine belongs under there. I guess its the 4.0 out of lexus ls400?

Adding to this, I spoke to the guy at 4x4 toys today. He's not taking business right now as he is rebuilding/ improving his premises. He mentioned a couple of things but without looking at it... you know the score.

The garage I bought it from are going to get their mechanic to look at it next tuesday, so I'm hoping for the best.

For further ongoing work I'd like someone who knows 3rd gen surfs, so without 4x4toys being available, does anyone know of a good place in surrey or south london at all?

it couldn't be something dumb like free wheeling hubs could it? How do I tell and does mine even have it anyway? Lol.

            cheers

              welcome t othe madhouse.

When I got my 3rd gen (nearly 4 years ago now) I had a similar problem, used the button on the side of the transfer lever, no flashing lights and no 4wd.

Turned out that the chap who had it in japan never used the 4wd so had the fuse disabled. For me, a new fuseable link and everything sorted.

Sorry i don't remember which fuse it was but, on mine, it's one that's under the bonnet, rather than one under the drivers dash.

              hope this helps

I Had The Same Problem With Mine Which Was
All Sorted Out By An Ex-toyota Mechanic Who
Now Has His Own Workshop In Taplow.

Thanks Hawaii and Johnny Toyota, both very helpful indeed. Blimey, was near taplow this morning....

Let's hope its something something simple like a fuse.

I am also under tall for my weight, lol

                  Cheers

Bit of an update. Garage said their mechanic needs it for a couple of days so he can have a proper look at the electrical side of 4x4 engagement. It may be a fuse or even a bulb. I'm cool with this, so that side I hope will end up sorted.

Funnily enough they even phoned the old owner who said he'd never even tried it in 4x4 hence never knew it didn't appear to work. Hmmm!!!

What I'd like to double check though is, they say that I CAN actually engage 4x4 if I put it all in neutral, engage 4wd button then move manually into 4H, even if it doesn't say so on the dash at the moment. On road its hard to tell if its in 4wd, as I can only compare with my old 2nd gen, which was noticably obvious in 4wd (heavier steering etc), and I haven't found anywhere to play in the mud yet, and the weather's been ###### great instead of wet.

So if this is true I am happy enough till its fully fixed (and just using the button works & dash lights up), but would 4x4 still work safely if I just move lever from 2h/4h into 4h postion whilst on the move? Or would I have to stop and go from neutral into4h each time?

                    Thanks for any advice.
