ah right then!! so somebody has taken off the wrong pipe, had done the EGR mod then noted that someone had done something already with the pipe!

it looks like some sort of fuel regulator, so id better put it back on

Thats part of the engine shut down system, it closes the throttle flap to stall to motor, so you don't run out of fuel from the spill control valve closing when you turn the key off. Therefore when starting up it dosn't have to 'prime' the injectors before it'll start. Its also a smoother shut down.

If the valve are plumbed wrong, the motor will be trying to turn off while its running and be rubbish, maybe someone just pulled them off to get it to work. Or they just got left off when doing some work on it.

The part in the red square hase two functions. One for shutdown and one for closing the butterfly as the EGR valve operates. I'm sure it's the same system as the 2.4 so you can block the botom hose but not the top hose. The top hose is what controls engine shutdown. The diaphragm is dual stage. Bottom hose partially closes it and top hose fully closes it. As Tony says, if connected wrongly then it can operate at the wrong time and cause problems.

          I've posted a diagram.

i think i see now, but i must admit i didnt have any problems on shut down at all, but looking at the diagrame i dont seem to have enought pipe, but will have another look! ill take the real egr hose off as performance has taken a biot of a hit since i put it back on!
time to get some blocking plates i think
