I have searched the forum but cant find anything that relates to this.
My KZN130 ’93 L reg Surf 3.0 tdi did what a lot of surfs do. The red management light went on, temp gauge shot up and there was lots of steam.
Got relayed home. I know the rad went cos there’s a big split across top, I assumed that the head was shot too.
Found very small crack in valve seat so I bought replacement head, bolts, glow pugs, belts etc.
The guy that was working on it for me got moved away by his firm before he could put it back together. So all the bits sat in the back of the Surf for a while.
A friend of a mate offered to put the head back on and get it going again. He did and the surf runs.
Now heres the problem.
Starts great, but if you put your foot down hard theres clouds of black smoke and knocking from the fuel pump. Put your foot down slowly just clouds of black smoke. The smoke stops at 3000 revs.
On driving theres no acceleration initially but once revs have built up to 2500 she goes like a rocket and theres no smoke.
70mph not a problem, no knocking as long as you don’t suddenly hit the accelerator.
My conclusions are 1. the pump worked fine before therefore unlikely to be pump, 2. smoke black so likely to be fuel not oil so probably not turbo.
Possible causes: timing was set up working to specs for 4 runner cos autodata doesn’t have surf on its database, has been suggested that a vacuum pipe on the turbo may be in wrong place.
Any suggestions……. Ps, egr mod done.
