I have a 94 3.0 hilux surf and pulling on to the motorway it jumps into overdrive early.it will kick down but jumps back into o/d again.when loaded up it acts, at its worst like its in low ratio when pulling away up hills not a clutch slip as the revs hold but higher revs than usual and low speed. i have changed the oil not a full change but it looked good.and the levels are correct when hot(levels check whilst running is that correct)
    any ideas...........cheers Andy

overdrive = 55mph, use the button to turn it off till you reach speed you want.
loaded or not mine pulls like a tank so can't help you on that one, sounds like a fuel problem. H

Mine will go into overdrive at an indicated 45mph and then into lock-up at an indicated 50mph, but that's on level ground and not flooring the "go" pedal.

When joining the M-way you would normally be doing around those figures, so I'd suggest your Surf is acting normally.

And personally, that's what I look to achieve, because the quicker you are in lock-up the less fuel you will be using.

I even have a switch so I can put the box into lockup earlier than that, or in other gears!

Helps with fuel consumption and keeping the ATF cool. Unless you are towing really heavy loads, i cant imagine why you'd want otherwise. It aint a racing car.

ive had this surf for three years and when joinng the motorway i could kick down and it would drop gear and go its not sluggish, but now it jumps back into overdrive, and when going up hills loaded up it would pull better than modern 4x4 but now it feels like a slipping like i have got it in 2 gear option on the box. I will check the fuel filter but that was changed last year, is there anyway of adjusting the fuel pump to boost fuel delivery,is the oil level checked when the egine is running on the auto box i know it has to be hot ran for 15mins but cant remember if it need to be running still.unladen it runs great except for the motorway thing cheers

            Yes!

Check the levels when running and hot, also shift the selector through It's full range first.
