  • Surfs in hot climates

    Has anyone got tips or tricks on running the surf when the ambient temps are hot (not in engine) because i have just moved to Italy & most days are high thirty's and she has a black paint job so seems to attract even more heat!.
    Oil viscosity is very thin almost as if its been at running temp even when parked up. (Have been using 15/40). Might just be my usual surf paranoia but doesn't hurt to ask!.

    Stop bragging!

    I might be tempted to fit an ATF cooler. Straightforward job and does a serious job of taking the heat out of your ATF before it goes into the rad.

      Thanks tho the ATF cooler sounds good but have never used one before, its just that the engine and ancils get so damn hot. will have a search again.

        Black paint will absorb the heat rather than reflect it...

        Engine bay temperature is always an issue with the surfs...

        All depends how mad you want to go...

        Cheap option
        A few thick washers under the bonnet hinge bolts to raise the rear of the bonnet, allowing the hot air out (and cooler air in) - think of a chimney...

        Less cheap option
        A few bonnet vents nearer the rear of the bonnet to let the heat out.

        Even less cheap option
        ATF cooler - as stated previously

        Getting pricey...
        mod the rad. Get a shorter inbuild ATF cooler in the rad so that it blocks less flow out of the rad at the bottom. An old Merc 190 ATF cooler fits quite nicely in there... but becomes quite a pain to connect the hoses up, not much room that side...
        Whilst you are at this one, replace the cores on the rad to get better air flow and more rows. The old V8 Triumph Stag layout works quite well.

        Very pricey option...
        Most of the above.

        Less obvious things...
        Make sure the clutch on the fan actually does what its supposed to do. Make sure your fluids are at the right level and the right viscosity for the ambient temperatures. Sure there is something about this on the Australian tech forum...

          Thanks will have a look later tonight on the aussie site. Getting bits of other cars shouldn't be too much of a drama (just got to overcome the language barrier first!!), but just out of curiosity are the bonnet vents hard to put in? & any idea how pricey is pricey???.

              I can understand your concerns. I parked mine up an went i went to fire it up again the 'leccy fan was running to try an cool it down...

              Always a bit nerve shredding when it comes on! After all its only one step from overheating

                Maybe just being paranoid ... but cant hurt to prep just in case as i had enough dramas with the 2.4!.
                Got me thinking too.... fan used to run on the 2.4 for a bit to cool it down after i stopped but when i turn off the 3.0 everything stops..i.e no fan running. Is this normal or was it just my old truck being strange! (still getting used to the 3.0 but engine temp seems fine tho..touch wood).

                  these engines have a belt driven fan, not a thermo fan... the only electric fan comes on for the AC condenser... at least on mine... so that would b y no fan keeps running once the engine is shut down...

                      the washers on bonnet hinge does actually work,just raises the rear edge of bonnet a few mm,thats why u see alot of chavs that used to do it on turbo escorts etc
