  • 1KZ-T Fuel Pump

    G'day,

Do any of you guys have any experience in ripping off a fuel injector pump on a Hilux Surf 3.0L 1KZ-T engine? Mine is pouring fuel out from the underside and a rapid rate of knots. I can't quite locate where it is coming from. It is not from any of the pipes, they are all tight and dry. It appears to be right underneath in a very hard to view spot, even with a proper mechanic mirror.

I assume it's going to be a nightmare getting it out but if any of you guys or gals have done this, I would love to know if you had an easy time or hard time with the job?

    Cheers
    Chris

I have taken out the 1kz te pump.If i remember there are 2 bolts on the front of the pump where the shaft goes thru the engine and there are 3 or 4 bolts then holding the pump to the bolck itself. You need to take the front pully off and then need to tap hard the shaft in order for the pump to come loose.
Tap the shaft hard but carefull as not to damage it. I did have the engines out the trucks to take these pumps off so it was quite easy but with the engine in place it will be a bit more fiddly..HTH
If you do need another pump sending over i have 1 3.0l pump left here

      Hi Richard,

Thanks for the info and the offer. I will be tackling this task next Friday after I finish night shift. I am not sure but the leak appears from the bottom of the unit. But where? That's another thing. I just can't get a handle on the location so I guess its coming off. Are you in the UK or AU? I am in Western Australia and if you fancy a beer or 3 hehe drop on in and lend us a hand

      Cheers

i'm in the uk and i don't think the mrs will believe me if i said i was going to oz to help someone remove a fuel pump.
good luck with it Chris and let us know how you get on.Just be carefull if you strip the pump down as it can be a sod to put back together again and i think someone said here before it may need to be calibrated again if it is stripped

Chris, it sounds like the fuel may be coming from the Timing Control Valve. It is pretty hard to get your hand around to it, but you might be able to through the left wheel well if you jack the car up. I have changed mine and it is a bugger of a job, but easier than changing the pump.

Thanks guys. Will check the Timing Control Valve out. No doubt Friday is going to be a bad day for me and the lux!

            Cheers

try looking here; http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/fuelpump.htm it may not be where your pump is leaking from, but it does detail removal of the pump complete with pictures.

The 1KZ-TE pump is different to the 2L-TE pump in that it is gear driven, not belt and the link info and pics do not apply to the 1KZ-TE.

1KZ-TE engine manual is here -

Ok 7 hours down and we have this thing nearly out. Started at 10am and at 5pm stopped. We have problems pulling/pushing with the puller tool removing the pump from the timing cover housing. The way we figure it we need some high tensile threaded bolts to push the shaft out of the housing (Timing belt housing). It seems very tight and we are pumping a lot of load onto the shaft to shift the pump back to the firewall. We have all the nuts and brackets off. This is a 1KZ-TE and is gear driven. Not sure if there are any hidden pitfalls here. The pump rotates left and right in the mounting suggesting we have it unbolted and unclamped completely.

If anyone has any words of wisdom we would appreciate it. Otherwise brute force here we come hehe

                    Cheers

Hi Chris. Have you undone the 3 or 4 bolts holding the pump to the engine aswell. When i had the engine out i just used a hammer and gave the shaft a few sharp hard hits and it then went back so it can be removed

                        Hi Richard,

As far as we know we have all the bolts out. 3 on the engine and 2 on the housing, one behind the heat resistant foam material between the engine block and pump. So far we have not removed the radiator, so giving it a good hit on the shaft may be an issue to crack the seal but if we need to we will do so, just with the auto it means transmission fluids going on the ground as well. I suppose we need to just wear it and rip the radiator out and load up the puller and give it a decent crack with a hammer to set it free?

Cheers again and thanks for the help you guys provide.

We are firing up the BBQ tomorrow to get this out, you are welcome to join us and slug down some West Australian brews

pull one of the trans pipes off at a time and bung it up with a bolt and that way you won't lose much trans fluid

Yea we will do that and then go hard on the shaft with a decent crack with the hammer to move it. We will let you guys know how it goes. That is what I love about these forums, hands on problems and you get information to help someone who has not done a repair which they can use this information to fix it.
