  • What to look for when buying one..

    hi guys and gals!

i'm thinking of buying a gen 3 surf 3.0 diesel, and was just wondering what i should keep my eye out for when looking at them.

do they suffer from anything major? gearbox probs? is the 3.0 diesel strong? head gaskets go every 5 mins? etc etc

just thought i'd do my homework FIRST before buying one and finding out that its a money pit like all my other cars!! lol!

    cheers,

    CURLY

Driving a Gen 3 on tarmac

I could be wrong, so I would check first with the handbook but I think you can use the 4 wheel drive anywhere by pressing the button on the left lever as I think this only puts the drive to the centre diff and then to the front wheels.
Doing this should not lock the centre diff so all the wheels can rotate at differing speeds.
If the lever is pulled in to the 4 wheel drive position the centre diff should lock.
The lights on the dash should show if the vehicle is in 4 wheel drive and whether the centre diff is locked or not.
If the diff is locked I would not drive for any great distance on a hard dry tarmac or concrete surface.
The above is my own interpretation of the instructions and they seem to work for me.

No warranty as to the accuracy of the above is intended or implied as others will possibly have an entirely different opinion to mine.
My opinion is given in good faith and is not intended to overrule any directions or instructions given by Toyota or others.

I have put this last paragraph in as I have been criticised for my opinions before and do not wish to tread on any ones toes again.

Please feel free to disregard any or all of this as you see fit but please check with the handbook before taking any ones word as gospel.

                    .
                    .
                    .
I could be wrong, but I think the 2 gen and the 3rd gen, have different drive systems.

I am sure the 3rd gen can be used in 4WD on the tarmac ?
