  • Grind Exhaust Manifold Flat?

I have a leak from at least one manifold port (to head). The manifold must be warped from preownership head destruction.
My spanking new toyota head shows up the warp and makes a squealing sound as the gasket vibrates at high frequency as gases jet out.

So is it alright to grind the face of the manifold down to make it straight?
Smack it with a 16lb Hammer and it will come off!

sounds ok to me, but isnt it more likely a case of needing a decent gasket instead? Dont go nuts grinding and spoil it.

The manifold gasket is standard Toyota so surely the right thing to use?
Can you suggest something else in there?

I know what you mean with the grinding. I'm thinking put a straight level on it, grind and then sand smooth bit by bit. I remember tightening it up to the head before and it pulled it into line mostly but I don't want unecessary forces on the studs.

double up on the gasket on the warped port.thats the easiest way.and use a bit of high temp sealant.

Yeah that might be worth a try - double gaskets!

If that don't work, I'd get it proffesionally machined, or get a s/h manifold.
