  • new batteries needed - quick question(s)

I'm failry sure my batteries are knackered, they just don't seem to want to hold a charge. I charged them up using my battery charger the other day - and when I came to start her up this morning I got the dreaded "struggle struggle click click click" noise. It was very cold mind, unfortunately the surf doesn't see much use over winter, it largely just sits on my drive from December till February.

I live in Bolton/Manchester - which batteries do I want - how much are they each and where is the best place to get them?

If you're gonna just replace one you need one at least 700cca

If you're gonna replace 2 you can get away with smaller ones.

Check out the battery mans shop on ebay if you want them delivered if not get down your local halfords or motor factors. Just remember if you're getting two that they're 'handed'

Avoid Hal£ords like the plague, they will tell you (a) they are special order (which is hal£fords speak for we will charge you lots for it) and (b) their batteries are expensive!

Hang on a min & i'll have a look at mine

... Ok You need an 069 for the drivers side battery and an 068 for the other side. that's what mine's got

toyota main stealer will be considerably cheaper than halfords, local factors vary wildly could be as little as £30 upto halfords prices (about £85) per battery.

If you're just replacing one, disconnect the other one and insulate the terminals, one knackeed battery will pull the good one down aswell. So best bet is to replace both at the same time, unless one's knackered coz it's got damaged and leaked or something and the other one's still good.

A pack of Batt Aid tablets and a top up with de-ionised water will probably get you another 8-12 months out of a battery that's just not holding charge aswell as it was. Aslong as it's not one of them sealed batteries you can't top up.

                  Re

                  WAIT!

Get an 088 and an 089!

They are bigger and more powerful!

                  They WILL fit!

You will get a lot more amps! (068/069 are about 590 or so and the 088/089 are 670).

My Surf had 2 new batteries last week, after trying to get a 068 and 069 the bloke at the local motor factors told me all he had was 088 and 089 which are about 1.5 inches bigger but pack a hell of a lot more power.

I thought they would be too big but they actually do fit!

They are same height and depth but about 1.5 inches longer.

My Surf starts like a Formula 1 now!

                  NO JOKE!

You cannot hear it turn over it starts that quick.

                  Gary

P.S. Cost me about £116.00 Inc VAT for BOTH!

If you want pics I'll put a few up later!

Also these are 12V and perfectly safe to use so before I get the usual "ooh dear", "burn your starter out" etc. yada yada - Please Don't!

These bigger batteries will actually improve the vehicle and I suppose could be considered a "MOD".

Had to replace mine last month. Local Tyre & Battery dealer wanted £85 each. Got mine at http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=16&cid=618&vid=173. I had to collect, as they won't send by carrier because of the acid content. That won't help you but it will give you an idea of a reasonable price. I think mine were about £110 incl VAT for both.

                      I got two new double-terminal 700cca batteries for £110 (£55 each)

One of their lads helped me fit them, tested my old batteries (one was good which I've kept as a spare and the other was knackered, so they disposed of it for me)

I would definitely recommend these guys - friendly, helpful and a good price - he asked where I'd heard of them so I told them this site, and they seemed quite pleased about that - they obviously do a lot of business through us!

If you leave your truck standing without starting for a while then a solar trickle charger is a good idea especially if you have an alarm.
Also get your batteries tested while you're present. I had a similar slow cranking problem, thought it was the batteries, had them tested and was told they were no good. so I bought new ones and there was very little change to the slow cranking. Then a week later the starter siezed up. not saying this is your problem but its worth checking.
