  • Glowplugs and Injectors

How often do glowplugs need changing? Can you get performance ones that perform better like you can with spark plugs?
Is it easy to clean injectors manually, the redex doesn't seem to be working and garage says it seems like one of injectors may be clogged.
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks

Jaysus Sammy you're as bad as I was when I got my surf . At least like meself you're not afraid to ask about something you obviously know little about. However having spent the last year at the www.hiluxsurf.co.uk School of Motoring and also at the Worldwideweb School of Google and also at the School of Lying underneath/and leaning over Your Surf I can now tell you with authority that

    1. Glope Lugs dont need changing until they stop working and you will know

    2. A peforming battery sounds better than performance glow plugs

    3. Taking injectors out isnt open heart surgery but is very awkward and the easier you want to make it for yourself - the longer and more involved it gets. Then, cleaning them yourself isnt an option, its give them to a specialist or buy new ones.

Ayup Sammy, what makes you think you`ve got a iffy injector?Jim is right about glow plugs. They either work or they don`t.It will show up by bad starting and plenty of smoke when it does start. You can check them with a multi- meter. They should show 7.2 ohms resistance. When they pack in,they normally give a lot higher reading.Hope that helps.

Hi, Info has been very useful for a new diesel user, Took it to garage 'cause quite a bit of smoke until really gets warmed up. The main thing I want to know is, How do I know my surf's running ok, I've never owned anything like one, never owned a diesel and have absolutely nothing to compare it to. If it was a petrol car I'd take it for a 'tune up' and then if it still ran the same I'd know it was working fine. Not foolproof I know, but how else do you tell?
        Thanks again

you will know if it isnt running ok, when you start it it should run smooth, not lumpy and misfiring, try waiting till the timer clicks off for the glow plugs before you start it, you will hear a click under the bonnet, the smoke is unburnt diesel probably from turning over too long before it starts

Hi & thanks for the reply.

My car starts perfect, on the button after only one turn of the engine! The reason other reason I wonder whether its set up properly is that I an only ever get a maximum of 22mpg, even doing 300miles @56mph on a motorway. I'm sure it should do better. The cars in really good condition and well serviced with only 69000 on clock (3.0td). Its got 31" tires would that throw mpg reading out?

            Thanks again

              Economy

I have 1993 SSR-X 3 ltr, which i have had since December. I have done 18 fill ups and have averaged 20.2 MPG. My emissions read 1.21 which shows fuel is burning well. I live in London and do longer runs at weekends to car shows and usually drive at about 80 on motorways. I am doing testing as shortly will be putting product on which will help fuel to burn more efficiently, so evey fill up is to exact same point in filler cap. Most people think they are probably doing more than they actually are, overall.
              Good luck Philip

On my '90 2.4 the 31x10.5x15 tyres put the mileage reading out by 8% (checked with a gps) so that would have a major effect on your fuel consumption.

the glow plugs don't work the same as spark plugs, they just heat up so that the diesel will ignite to start the engine. after that it works just off the heat of the engine from it running. because diesel doesn't rely on a spark, just heat and compression to ignite.
wouldn't bother with fuel treatments, go for a diesel injector cleaner and follow the instructions on the tin.

                    Thanks guys been really helpful.
I used to be able to take my vw beetle engine out at side of road just with the tools I had in the bonnet, This is soooo different. Good though. Is redex injector cleaner best? Is there any you can pour/spray into air filter box or turbo?
Thanks again I bow to your superior knowledge

Check your brakes aren't binding. The rear ones on mine were bad for sticking when I first got it(maybe it had been sitting around for a while).

Where do I get the wynn's???
Tried all over-just cant find it. Brakes not binding good idea though. I put a gallon of petrol in a full tank of diesel before mot-cures all smoke temporarily!
Any help with the wynn's would be useful.
