  • Fan/Heater Control panel

    Hi Guys,
Just wondering if any of you have ever come across a fan/heater control panel with just the fan control slider not working. Well that is it works on high but will not work in low or any position in between that and high. It all happened when i jump started another car off my surf and it blew the fan fuse which i replaced which fixed the problem for a short period but now its just on high it works. Is it a case that the slider has been burned by the spike that blew the fuse or is it a case of a simple fix? Please tell me it is cause i priced a new control pnael from toyota and its coming in at 500 euro!!! Any help greatly appreciated. Cheers.

normally if it only works on high, but in any other position the vents are open (i.e. on the motorway or when moving at a good speed you can feel the airflow coming through gently but the fans not turning) except in OFF wher it will close the vents aswell, and any airflow will stop. It's the rheostat that's gone, on a 2nd gen (89-95 model) the rheostat is up behind the glovebox somewhere but i haven't found it yet (more a case of being lazy than anything else), mine needs changing aswell.

It has a 4 pin plug IIRC and is located on the side of one of the blower duct boxes up there somewhere.

          I'm thinking I have a similar problem?

Fan isn't working at the moment on any switch setting.

I stripped out the fan to fault find. Its sitting on my lap in the passenger seat and I reach for the multimeter and the fan suddenly starts. And works perfectly on all switch settings.

So I replace it and it works fine, for a week. Then stops and doesn't work on any switch setting.

Could this be a rheostat problem too?

My gen 3 had the same issue - fan works at full speed or nothing. It was the rheostat which is bolted to the plastic box housing the fan. Swapped for a secondhand part. Works perfectly now.
Bear ona bike - your problem souinds more like a dodgy connection, switch or broken wire. When the rheostat resistors fail, it is permenant!
