  • AC probs

    Hi all

After 2 years of surf ownership it would seem I have my first problem.

It comes in that the AC doesn’t anymore. After being out in the rain on sat, me and a very soggy dog jumped into the truck, before I get the engine started the windows steam up straight away - as they do. Putting the ac on usually sorts this is seconds. However not this time, didn’t shift the misty windows at all.

After a brief inspection the clutch on what I presume is the pump does engage but only momentarily before disengaging again (1-2 secs). The fan on the ac rad also activates simultaneously with the clutch on the pump. Also, the engine revs used to increase to about 750 (idle) with the ac on, now there is no change idle is about 500 (manual trans).

    Thanks in anticipation

    Chris

      cheers

I think the A/C gas in a consumable.

        It needs topping up.

Halfords arnt too bad for it. at most your probably looking about £100 to top up.

Look in the yellow pages for a mobile vehicle A/C engineer. Providing you have the new type gas, it'll cost around 60-70 quid, if you have the older R12 gas, then you're looking at around 120 quid, as some parts will need replacing/up-grading.

A/C gas leaks over time, thats pretty much a fact of life, regular short use of the a/c keeps the seals lubricated and slows this down. Never using the a/c will lead to drying out of the seal faces and all the gas vanishing. It might never seal again. If youve been using it on a regular basis however all you will likely need is a top up. Do it yourself using the bottle from Halfords. £ 40 or so. That of course is only possible if youre on R134. I used it and it was just fine

As yours is a 94 you will almost certainly be on R134.

                Cheers fellas

I think I have the new stuff as I priced up a service earlier in the year but never got round to getting it done.

I suppose ill give the halfords stuff a whirl and see if it holds the gas otherwise ill be on the yell.com.

I try to use the ac at least once a week for that very reason. Our shoot is an hr up the A1; I generally put it on for one way of the journey. That should be enough do you think?

you will see the A/C compressor. There is a little blue cap and a little red one. One of them is what you're looking for to top up. Can't remember which one!

Or just rip the whole lot out of the truck!

                              Update

Purchased said gas from halfords. plugged pressure guage in and the needle reads bottom of the blue when fan and ac pump clutch kick in and top of the blue section when fan and pump are inactive. instructions indicate anywhere in the blue is ok. Is the pressure ment to fluctuate as stated above?

Anybody got any other ideas of what could be wrong with it. symptoms are the same as before.

                              cheers
