  • running on 3 cylinders...

    Hi everyone

have just been offered a burgundy 3ltr td 94 uk 4runner, fsh. Only prob is she is supposedly only running on 3 cylinders and very clattery. Seller thinks it's a valve prob. Car supposedly starts and runs. From photo's it;s in very good condition for a uk car - new doors, tailgate innards, running boards and good tyres.

My current blue 94 runner is pretty shabby thanks to an uninsured white van man but is on a 'new' kzte to kzt lump from a low mileage surf couple of years back. Bar slightly lower (but fine) oil pressure she runs great. Because of this i do have a spare complete recon head from my original kzt with about 60k on. work was done at local engine specialists and I seem to remember (i didnt pay) it was pressure tested, new vlaves as necessary etc etc - the works. Has been in dry storage for 2 years now.

Any ideas on why the red one is running on 3 cylinders? and the vlaue of this? If pusghh comes to shove and the lump is knacked I could sell on or strip for spares.

    thanks

It could be a blocked injector on one of the cylinders.

Either way, a compression test will find any problems with valves or pistons.

Thanks for the input, would that make her sound clattery though?

Anyone an idea of value of her as is now?

Don't want to either offend or make a mug of myself when I collect her....

If the injector is flooding the cylinder with diesel it would.

It'll prob be worth about £800 ish, that's what I paid for the last non running one

          Just been over to see.....

starts and runs VERY noisy, almost a bang as opposed to a clatter. Grey smoke on tickover increasing as she revs. Has lots of oil, maybe a bit too much on dipstick as if oil on water but no tell tale signs - no metal filings no evidence of water.

Water in rad looks either as if been topped up too but no sign of oil, just very pink. Some fresh oil on back of cylinder head on LHS and some oil around bell housing, prob dripped down. Neither is pishing out or even dripping.

PLus side 3 new doors last year, 1 new running board, 1 side front ot rear brake line replaced, new tailgate regulator and motor - goes up better than mine did the day we collected it from Gordon Lamb new new. Interior very clean with exception of small tear in drivers bolster. 2 new batteries, 4 nearly new tyres, good spare and all wheels ok, no kerbing just usual pitting. Bodywork is generally excellent, chassis good, no signs of welding. Has had recall from toyo for steering rack with complimentory bottle of champers (i still have mine!). All electrics seem to work fine. She is wine over grey in gx spec with wide arches, boards, sun roof etc but no air con.

Anyone any further comment? prob? price? Ive left a retaining deposit and am going back tomorrow with a transporter and someone a little more clued up than me.

Could be a broken cam follower/bucket or a dropped valve . I just bought a 2.4 with similar fault but have not yet stripped to confirm fault is top end .

Let us know how you get on...... I saw that one up for grabs on it's 3 cylinders. Was tempted myself but couldn't stretch to more luxury 4x4's.

Smack it with a 16lb Hammer and it will come off!

yeah will do, although might be awhile until I get her looked at properly, like next payday.

lets pray my blue one doesn't decide to break till after then......

finally here. collected the transporter this morning, ancient old barge that felt like it weighed a ton.

40min hop up and down the valleys of central derbyshire towards Bakewell and up a big hill to where she was parked. loaded and back againg carefully.

unloaded onto the drive, actually sounds better when running under load. Mech listened via bell's magic and thinks it's the big end big time. On a plus side the clutch judders like anna nicole must have the first time she saw her hubbie naked. Cest la vie.

I have no idea of the implications of this at all - more terminal / pricey than the head? Engine out job?

Another option mate is new engine in, there looks to be a good deal on ebay but if you have the money may give you many happy years with your surf.
These are currently on ebay worth a look.

don't have the cash at the moment and can't really justify as it's a 2nd truck. Also it was a real ball ache last time swapping bits from the kzt onto replacement kzte lump.

Could really do with a nice rolled landcruiser II or uk 4runner.....

no no must resist will stick with getting it checked properley then poss rebuild using parts from my other knackered kzt.

Anyone know of a reputable and fair diesel mech near J28 M1??

                          Quick update,

pic below of truck, as you can see too good to break.

have been offered a kzte from a breaker, 97 80k miles for 650 + vat, unless they'll take less have got a rebuild lined up using this lump and my spare with shagged gearing.

Blue one underneath is my daily driver which I've had about 7 years and my uncle from new before that. Well battered but runs pretty much spot on, thanks you's to the white van man for the crunched front.
