  • Possible oil leak but definately a leak :(

As some of you may know a recently bought a surf ssr-g on a 96 which i believe is a 3rd gen (still new to this)

When i got 4x4 home it was dark and was tired after picking it up from kent

I bought it from a guy who had bought it a 2 weeks earlier from a member on ebay called spoon456 i think he's mrsurf here.

Anyway on the monday i noticed a small patch of black oil the size of a 50p coin or a £2, finally i got round to taking a couple of pics and this is the 1st real time i have had to post regarding this.

I took the pics from under the drivers side door not the greatest pics but hopefully someone may know the issue with luck.

In the center under where the engine is located is a metal plate where the drive shafts are now this has quite a bit of sticky oil (might be the gearbox) there is also a white plastic clip that looks like electrics now above that there is quite a bit of oil up their

Question is does anyone know the cause of this?

It only drips as far as i know when the 4x4 stops even for 20 mins and is usually 1 or 2 drops max (50p or £2 coin sized)
Jeep runs fine and is a lovely made machine and don't want to feck the engine up or whatever the leak is from any ideas b4 i have to take it to mechanics

Is it running on a veg oil mix cos veg oil has a sticky texture and make the pump leak a little?

Oil from that area could be turbo bearing oil feed, dipstick tube, rocker cover, sump or head gasket (unlikly, but the pressure line up to the head is in tha back corner)

Overfilled Auto box and its coming out the dipstick. or front diff pinion seal.

You need to give it a good clean up and then try and see where its running down form.

The head was changed in march 06 got the receipt for that here, also tried the dipstick doesn't seem to be oil around that area, but i had problems getting a reading on dipstick when i pulled it out 2nd time after cleaning as it a bitch to get out clean without smudging it.

Not used veg oil but that doesn't mean others haven't .

I had a similar issue with my rev 1 sump pipe that had hardened and split where the jubilee clip was.

Ok had another go under surf and looked around the engine bay.
Engine bay looks clean and cant see any leaks, cept 1 very small bit and to be honest i went around it and i think its when it was sealed, here it is
          pic 1

Now as for the gearbox etc take a look there is quite a bit along the whole unit, pic 4 and pic 6 has the pics of the bars going across the car and even both sets of them have oil surface and thats about a foot or so apart and it begins under the plate where the front drive shafts are

It's very possible m8 specially if the metal plate on the front is to go by, as up a bit where the white toilet paper is the worst oil residue

Just been scouring through the site and noticed this post about flywheel is this high up

                http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/sh...ghlight=clutch

Hoping it isn't as it's gonna be a expensive job

Anyone else think of anything i could be as it's up where the white tissue is just before the fuel tank(me thinks) drivers side front end.

It only "seems" to leak when the car is at a stop for 20mins or so i have done some tests to see if it's leaking when on the move then engine running leave it standing for 5mins then backing up and no fluid, throughout this there are no funny noises or clanking from engine etc..

It was the rocker cover gasket, thanks tony, the guys who fitted the new head used the old gasket rather than fit a new £7

Least it's fixed now and bell housing is now clean total £63 and change
