    is this normal?
when the engin is at normal temperature and listening to the engin ticking over in nutral.. then when i put my foot on the brake and engage it into drive and hold it on the foot brake there is definatly a change in the engin noise, as if something els is opperating,
obviously the gear mechanisum is engaged and waiting for the revs to go up so it will force the truck foreward, (i haven't noticed it in reverse)
there is no effort in holding the truck back on the foot brake, so it isn't creeping and the tickover is at the right speed, its just this slight noise, i cant say i have noticed it beffor, and don't know if they are all like it, or wether i'me just getting fussy, and whats causing it?

no mate, it's more like a constant drag, like if you where to gently hold the end of a screwdriver against the side of a pulley wheel while its running, just enough to give out an extra bit of noise or a frequensey.
i was figuring that it may be around the torque converter, as soon as i lift the revs and start to move foreward the noise goes away as if its something like a slack bearing back-lashing or reverbartating while its running slowly and then when it speeds up it finds a balance and runs even, smoothly and quietly.

sorry about the stereo post above..grrrr, i noticed i'd not inserted a space between "card" and "game"..so hit the spacebar and re pressed submit, thinking it would automatically replace the first post which was already chugging around in the system..but naa..then i couldn't find a delete option..so there you have it..testimony to my incompedence..cars, spelling and computors..

Looks like The Planetary Gears involved in your Trucks first gear ar most probably a bit worn out more than normal. this has happened to my friends 92 Surf 2LTE. but u should check it out first. Try to run your truck on a Hilly place about 10 - 15 degrees steep grade. engage it on Drive then lift your foot off the foot brake pedal. your Truck should slowly creep its way up the hilly grade without any noise. If you still hear the noise then it might be time for you to change your Automatic Transmission Fluid with a Clean new one. As we know, as our Surfs accumulate mileage, the additive properties of our ATF's slowly break down resulting in lesser protection against extremes of temperature in which the auto trannys exposed to.

thanx for the replies kathyafety and steved, i will try that creeping foreward thing on an incline tomorrow,
just as a matter of interest, if i'm at a standstill on a steep incline say 25 degrees or more and take my foot off the break while its in drive and only ticking over, should it roll bakwards?

When you select a gear on a automatic the apropriate clutches engage, once engaged they do not slip all slip is in the torque converter which is a fuid clutch various things will dictate as to wether it will hold or creep temprature of the fluid, load, tick over speed etc, you will soon learn the characteristics of your vehicle.
