can anyone tell me what the device that fits onto bottom of fuel filter does. it has some kind of float mechanism
    cheers

the little tap thing on the bottom of the fuel filter is to drain any water thats got into the fuel filter

pritty sure its a drain off and also water being heavier than diesel an indicator light comes on -on the dash to warn of contamination in fuel filter. thats why its got wires coming off it.

Yeah, i did my auto box oil last weekend, then, last night i got a warning light on the dash between the glowplug light and timing belt warning! straight away, the wife says "idiot, i knew you shouldn't have tried the oil change..whatever have you put in it?"...i really thought i'd knackered the box..talk about relief when i realised it was a water in the filter light!

Tried draining it this morning, but its well tight..daren't put the pliers on it in case i broke the tab off..anyway, gonna change the filter tommorow now instead..should be fun..reading the info..i bet its going to be tight!

i had to use pliers on mine to undo it as it was that tight.Just get a firm grip with the pliers and wriggle them till you feel the tap release

Okay storm, cheers..i'll give it some welly then..like i say, i've a filter sitting in the shed, so a good time to change it..its going to be fun, what with the starter motor kaput! i'll have to take the filter mount off to get the starter out anyway..these things come to try us eh? lucky the guy next door told me the thing i was looking to pull off was the alternator he's going to help..he's good with things like that you see...i hope!...i'm never going to get that two inch lift!

you will probably find it easier to take the filter mount off to undo the filter as they can be tight as a tight thing, and also you may need mole grips or something to undo the drain tape fitment on the filter to put onto the new filter.Just remember which way the 2 fuel pipes connect to the filter and you can fill the filter with redex before fitting it so that you have neat redex going thru the injectors to give them a good clean

I did note that redex tip whilst doing the homework..what i wasn't sure of, was quite how much to put in? i mean, would you whack a whole bottle into the filter?..i used that forte stuff that roughtrax sell at the last service..i've none left, as i used it..but is that the same kinda thing as redex?

there was also a note on one of the filter changing threads to mark one pipe with tipex, and it's respective pipe..so yeah, good tip..if there are two hoses, and two places to stick em..then its a sure bet i'd get them the wrong way round!

Funny how faced with a starter motor repair, suddenly a fuel filter change becomes a less daunting prospect..that filter has been kicking around for a year or more!

just fill the filter right up as much as you can get in it and then once fitted i just give the primer a few quick pumps and she fires up ok and just leave it on tickover for a couple of mins and then take it out for hard drive with not o/d and ect off also just to get it working

ther is some stuff called wynns diesel clean-up, it is specially designed to go in the fuel filter, rather than a fuel addative, i used it when i changed mine, it will fill a new filter to about an inch bellow the top so you won't spill it and then a few pumps on the primer and it will be full, i don't know if its any good, it just seemed more relavent to the job.

its dificult to get the pipes mixed up because one comes from underneath and the other is side mounted, and there isnt much slack because of risck of kinking. if you wipe the spouts dry where the pipes join on you will get a tighter seal, because the standard clips arnt brilliant.

Ahhh, it's done! I'll run through it cause i'm excited! Once i'd gotton the whole assembly off, i managed to turn the tap with pliers..drained off fuel and i assume water..tightened it up again, then went for the unscrewing of the plastic..like yeah! took a screwdriver to it, but straight away, snapped off a plastic lug..eventually got a turn on it, and then it came away without too much further grief..

Then the good bit!..what i ended up doing was sticking a driver right through the filter, about an inch or so up..then, by refiting to the bulkhead upside down, i was able to put a metal bar through and twist it off..Actually, like that it wasn't too bad..filled her up with neat redex after replacing the plastic, re fitted, plunged and job done...i've not run it properly get, so not certain if i'm gonna find some air..but hey..another job i can do all on my ownsome....ta for the input guys..
