  • Automatic nightmare! Much £££££ age

Hi, wondered if anyone could help me find out what the problem is with my
1994 ssrx 3ltr Automatic gearbox and how much money this is likely to set me back to fix.

I was having some problems with her beforehand as she was overheating on hills. I took her to a local garage who told me somewhat off the mark that it was something to do with the fan.... blah blah blah. I was due to take her in to get her fixed and when we went to drive off she would not move!! When put into drive she made an awful noise.

I live in Spain so it is pretty usual to have problems with mechanics here. But I went to someone else, and after much deliberations, he came to pick her up. It was then that we found out that she will still drive in 4 wheel drive. Has anyone any idea what this is all about? I am going to take her to the local Toyota garage on the back of a recovery truck but would like to have some idea of the cost beforehand so I am not completely knocked over by this and also to make sure she is still salvageable........

If it's not driving in 2WD, but is in 4WD, it sounds to me that it might be a transfer gearbox problem??? This sounds expensive. I may be wrong though.

If it's overheated more than once, then the transmission fluid is probably burnt.
Drain and renew the fluid first before you send it off for diagnosis, then think about fitting an extra transmission cooler and/or adjusting the viscous fan on the engine so that it operates more efficiently.
