  • Not a good day -cam belt wise!

Big problems, though maybe not as bad as it could have been. I drove my 3.0TD surf to the airport everthing seamed OK parked up came back a week later tried to start it Clunk! it sounded like a big problem so I took the top bolt and clip off the cam belt cover so I could lever it away and see inside. No cam belt tension, the clunk was the piston hitting a valve I assume.
As it wasn't running at the time I hope I will get away with just putting a new belt on. What do you think?
Also has anyone got any info on timing marks etc?

    Cheers Martin

    Oooer....

Just a small 'donk' on a valve will bend it so that it will no longer seat or even rotate in the guide. You could be very lucky but I doubt it. Re-time engine, with new belt installed, then diesel compression test for even pressures for all 4 cylinders.

Some mechanics that tend to be slap dash turn engines over with the cam timing set up wrong or the belt off and just this lightish valve/piston interface will cause bending of the valve stem even ever so slightly bent will create problems.

    Good luck.
