  • Turbo oil feed return pipe leak

After changing engine oil and filter on the 4runner on Saturday, I did an inspection under the truck and notice the oil feed return pipe from turbo had oil on it, and a small amount had dripped onto the front diff housing, but since dried out. Its only a minor leak, and i have never notice oil on the driveway, and oil level in engine not dropping noticeably

Guess its a thing to change before the leak worsens, but looks a PIG of a job to do! - anyone changed the pipe, pretty sure the leak is below the gasket between pipe and turbo
how much are the new pipes and any tips for changing, e.g. buy a box of plasters!

I had to get mine from Toyota and if i remember rightly it was about £20.The 2 bolts on the block ain't too bad its the other 2 that you need to get too are awkward but if you got a long enough ext/bar then you can bend the pipe a bit to get at the other 2 bolts anfd you may need the 2 gaskets aswell for that pipe.I don't think i have the part no. for the pipe but i think i still have the gasket numbers if you want them

I also have the old one i took off of mine which i thought i bent out of shape but is still ok as its not creased or anything you can have if you need it

yep - if you have part- nos for gasket would be appreciated,
although I have a copy on EPC, i can prob find them there if i can remember how to use it...
will probably put a brand new pipe on, but thanks for offer of yours, - why did you replace it anyway?

do you have to drain engine oil first? or is most of it in the sump as would be pain as i have only just changed it!

i will dig the no's out tomorrow for you.
When i took the turbo out i thought i had kinked the pipe but i found i never in the end but like you i suppose i fitted new with the gaskets which that way i am gaurenteed it is all ok.
i only lost a slight trickle when the pipe was takien off not even a cup full

Isn't there also the oil feed pipe from the block? (highlighted in attached image)
This is buried up behind the exhaust turbine scroll.

Mine is also leaking. - The pipe is cracked at the lower flange. (At first, I too thought it was the gasket)
It's a job I'm not looking forward to and I have been putting off for a few weeks now.
Is it possible to replace this part without removing the turbo and exhaust manifold?

It is possible to replace that bit but you will also need the banjo gasket which is toyota part number 90904 - 30004
It is awkward to get to the banjo bolt and i think that was the worst out of the lot to do as you will need to go in from the wheel arch to do it and just be carefull you dont loose/break the copper banjo gasket on refitting.
I cantremember for certain but i think the pipe going towards the back of the block may be bolted to the block about half way along

bugga - replacing this pipe is looking like more of a pig of a job, if that banjo needs undo-ing too, think i spotted that thinner pipe last night,

how much pressure is the oil under in that return pipe? is it pressured or gravity flow?

When i took mine off it wasn't under any pressure.Sorry Andy i forgot about the banjo gasket yesterday. That was just over £7 + vat

The job is a fiddly one to do but if it's leaking then i would get it done as soon as really incase it goes altogether. The banjo bolt is right behind the turbo to exhaust pipe but you should be able to do it ok tho

sorry - i meant pressure when the engine is running?
if pressurized during engine operation, leak is more likely to worsen more quickly

just trying to find an excuse to delay replacing it! which i shouldnt

i would of thought it would be pressure as it is pumped around with the engine running so i would think it would just get worse

The return pipe is just a gravity feed jobby, but there's probably some positive pressure in the crank case that would force some oil out. Mine's leaking quite a lot.
I'm contemplating cutting the pipe near the elbow, welding the crack (on the lower flange where mine is leaking,) then sleeving the pipe with hose and clamping it.
I've noticed that the turbo diesel LandCruisers use a section of hose for the turbo oil drain, but the current TD Hilux uses a similar setup to the Surf (with the concertina/corrugated section of pipe.

cant see how that banjo bolt can be undone with everything in situ (turbo/exhuast) its so hidden away and inaccessible to get a spanner or socket bar anywhere near it!
