  • Help. Surf Wont Start......

Surf 3ltr. Used last on Tues eve. Went out to start it just now and it wont...
Clueless here - all the correct lights are lit on dash, fuel in tank, oil OK. Engine turns on ingnition but wont fire up. Even hooked it up for jump start (just in case batteries were low) to another 4x4 but still wont fire

This lady now doesn't know what to do - go on roll your eyes guys but I really do require some hints here this import vehicle is new to me and I just don't know where to start looking.......

Little engine check light doesn't come on at ignition point - tried disconeccting immobiliser and by passing it and it still wont fire

you were looking at the dash lights then and not the front of the surf with all the lights on were you.

try pressing the fuel primer on top of the fuel filter a few times till it gets hard (ooooohhhhh aaaaarrrggggg) and then try to start it again

also wait till you hear the click of the relay for the glow plugs before actually starting the engine

if it's got a manual primer on the fuel pump it may be worth trying that

also turn on the ignition but don't start it, give it about 20 seconds or until you hear a click then fire it up

Or turn the ignition on and off several times then turn it over for upto about 10 or 15 seconds and see if that does the trick, probably not the best advice mechanically, but i have to crank mine for a while sometimes. i normally pump the throttle as i do it.

next thing would be glowplug fuse, it's a $$$$$$ great 80 amp fuse on a 2.4, not sure about 3.0ltr, probably in the fuse box in the engine bay

how many cuts were there on the immobiliser? you sure you bypassed all of it? could be a cut on the fuel pump circuit.

Thanks Richard _ yep I was looking at dash lights and not the pretty ones out front!!!!!
Been and done what you said and pumped primer until it was hard - let go and it goes all soft to press (erhumm no puns or double entendres here please - just dont know how else to describe it) and still dont start

COULD the fuel filter be blocked as there is a new one in a box in the back of surf?????? Would this cause same prob.???

Could be the fuel cut off solenoid ( on the fuel pump?) but the immobilizer is the most likely if it just stopped.

There is also an engine earth lead at the back of the engine, if this is broken/not attached the engine wont run
If it aint broke dont fix it

Ok first of all thanks for all the advice so far - Primed Fuel pump - once primed and hard it then goes soft after about 5-10mins-engine cranks but wont start. Changed passenger side battery to New bigger-amp-hour one off the disco as a cell was low on it.
Checked all cables and links we can see.
The heater plug light doesn't come on, neither does the engine check light that is usually on as you start then goes off as engine starts. All fuses OK.
Hubby knackered, Dad keeping the peace - all of us run out of ideas now.....

Immobiliser is just a switch on dash - not a fancy gadget with button or fob so we bypassed switch.

sounds to me like it's your fuel or the immobilizer. is the immobilizer a factory one, is it a 1 or 2 wire one? pics of the immobilizer might help as i have just got rid of my old one and installed a new one

The fuel primer going soft again makes me suspect the fuel pump isn't running when you turn it over, could be down to the immobilizer as it sounds like raher than bypassing the immobilizer itself, you've bypassed the switch to turrn the immobiliser on and off.

Dunno about the ignition lights though, as i don't know what comes on on the 3.0ltr normally, but again could be immobiliser if the immobiliser has been fitted with a cut in the ignition circuit, which it should.

I would be tempted to pull a diesel hose off somewhere to see if the fuel pump is running, as i don't know the 3.0ltr engine i can't say which is the best hose to pull or where to find it.

pull a pipe off from the fuel filter

as far as the immobilizer gose take off the panel directly behind the wheel looking from underneath follow the wiring loom down, until you come to where they have broken the wire/s then by pass them. the wires should be a black and red, black and yellow and a black i think. then just join the wires together
