  • Rear Wheel Bearings

I have a 1994 Surf 3.0TD, done 188,000km. For a while I have a heard a chafing noise (sort of chumf, chumf) from the nearside rear wheel when driving, now today there is a definite rumble from the offside rear. I jacked the rear up and there is now definite play in several places as I rotate the rear wheel. I'm assuming that the rear wheel bearings are shot and need replacing. I presume there's no adjustment to tighten them up, is there?

I read the article on this site for replacing the rear wheel bearings on a later, 1996, Surf with ABS. Is the job of replacing them on my 1994 model the same / any easier? I don't have ABS for a start.

Living in a flat and not having anywhere here to repair the car, it may have to go into a local garage. What sort of price can I expect to pay for replacing both the offside and nearside rear bearings?
