  • Clutch?

My SSR-G has done roughly 111,000 kilometres now, took her to Bristol yesterday and all was fine on the motorway on the way down. Got to work and picked up a mate to goto a local pub for Crimbo lunch and that's when the fun started!

Would engage gears fine (manual) but when I was lifting the clutch pedal up there was muchos crunching and what felt to me like slipping! When I did get a gear and put my foot down there seemed to be a lack of power and more crunching. Please tell me this is my clutch and nothing more serious?

    Tim

P.S. had to leave the Surf there (no AA/RAC cover) and get the sodding train back to Chester! Will have to sort her out next week...gutted.

      Flywheel gone

Sorry to hear of the problem. But what you have described happened to me. That is the dual mass flywheel disintegrating. Replaced the whole lot with a new flywheel clutch kit. Expensive to start with but at least the future clutches should be a little cheaper.

Cheers guys, thanks Tony been on Roughtrax website to see how much clutch kits are. I need to get the car recovered this week. Right now it's stranded in Bristol in a pub car park.

Update: Got the Surf recovered to Nationwide Autocentre in Wrexham yesterday. They phoned me first thing this morning to say it was defo the clutch, but he couldn't tell at that early stage if the centre plate had gone. Will update you as it goes.

I trust them though, they did the head(s) on my old mans 2.4 TD Auto, all in all was 1500 squids so not bad.

It cost about £550 (parts and labour) if I remember corectly to replace my knackerd DMF with a UK spec solid flywheel setup 2K£ is a rip-off even if they replace the DMF.

Have told them they can bugger off and I will supply the parts!

So last Thursday I ordered the solid flywheel kit including clutch etc. from RoughTrax which should be in Wrexham for first thing today.

So it will now be interesting to see how much they will charge me for labour, they've been funny $$$$ers with me whereas my Dad said that the guys in Bangor were very helpful. Also my girlfriends driving instructor (who is into serious off-roading) told her on Saturday to watch them as they are renowned for being rip-off merchants.

Nightmare, went to pick the car up this afternoon and straight away when I started it up I could hear this awful high pitched noise. At first I thought it might be the fan belt but I pushed the clutch pedal down and it was gone, lift clutch pedal up and it's back!!!

So drove it away about a mile or so into Wrexham and then swung it round and headed back as I was not $$$$ing happy. Parked up in front of the reception and walked in. Manager says to me "What's up?" I said that there is a noise blah blah blah and he say that's your thrust bearing. I told him that it shouldn't be doing that to which he replied "read your invoice...customer supplied parts are not warranted so it's not my problem". FFS, so I told him that they are the ones who have put the clutch in and everything back together but he still said sorry not our problem. So I said I would phone their head office in the morning and he said "you do that".

I am not impressed, he also told me that the parts they fitted were reconditioned and not new. Is this true? I spoke to the girl at RoughTrax and she said that everything in the kit was OEM apart from the clutch plate which is an aftermaket one!!!

My Dad has told me to phone the AA in the morning seeing as Nationwide Auto Centres are an AA approved repairer, get an engineers report and then go back to Nationwide Auto Centres' head office with proof of what's wrong.

I got the Surf back home tonight as I said to the Mrs. I'm not going anywhere in this I'm taking it straight home to get the Golf. By the time I got home it was crunching in reverse and I was struggling to get it into gear.

Garages in this country really $$$$ me off!

Sounds like you've been shafted, Roughtrax wouldn't have supplied recon parts without stating it.

Even if it was recon, it should still work!!

                          Wa**ers. Keep us imformed.

Have spoken to Barry at RT today, he's confirmed that the parts are as stated, have been in touch with trading standards today who have given me some ammo. Have typed a letter up tonight which is going to Nationwide's head office tomorrow.

                            Stay tuned folks!

                              Update...

After sending a 3 page letter to Nationwide head office and I will cut this story down and short, told them that I was not happy with the customer service in Wrexham and the regional manager agreed that I could take the Surf into their Chester branch instead to see what was wrong.

Well I was going to take the Surf in today, as I was about to back it off the drive and went to clean the windscreen I realised that I didn't have any screenwash in so I thought I would top it up and check the fluids while I was at it! Guess what?

Topped up the washer bottle and then went to check the oil, no oil in the car whatsoever, bone dry!!!!!!!!!

So shot down to the local BP garage and bought some oil, relevance here to also take into account is that I've owned this car now for just over a year and in that time it has never used a drop of oil.

                              I was horrified!!!

Either they (Nationwide) haven't replaced the engine oil when they dropped the gearbox off and replaced it or my old man reckons they may have screwed the rear seal and he reckons if that's the case maybe the engine oil has got into the gearbox.

I'll be getting back onto the head office first thing on Monday morning, engine could've seized or the turbo could have gone bang. FFS...not f**king impressed.
