  • 3rd gen: servicing, ADD, LSD

    Hi,

New member here - hope theres no nasty initiations lurking!!!

Bought a 3rd gen SSRG (with LEATHER INTERIOR) and 60000miles last month. As this is my first 4x4 I can do with some seasoned expert advise that seems to be available out there:

Question 1) Will be having a full service including replacing cambelt, transmission & diff oils etc. Does my 3rd gen have a LSD? how would I be able to tell if it has one or not? If it has, it will need oil changing too....

The 4wd indicator on the dash is constantly flashing and I suspect the ADD (automatic dissengaging differential) system to be faulty. Have checked an OZ site but the example this is a 2nd gen. When I hit the 4wd switch the solenoids 'tick' but the actuator is not engaging to put the front wheels into 4wd.

Question 2) Any ideas?? Do the 3rd gens have the vacuum tank for the ADD system?? If so, where is it located as I cannot seem to find one on mine?

Question 3) are there any surf specialists in the North West who will know how to trouble shoot the ADD problem? Does not seem like rocket science but would like someone with previous experience to look at my new BABY.

Bit of background: am south african where the Hilux 'pickup' has ruled for over 30 years, but Toyota SA have never brought in the surf/4runner for some reason. I will be taking mine with me when I return home in 2-3 years.

Thanks in advance to you PRO's out there. will post pics soon. Love this site....

1/ It should cover everything except the Cambelt, thats always extra work. (not much though on a 3.0) Garages are all different, you'll have to ask about the diff oils, In my experiance they won't get looked at, the Tranny fluid should definatly at least be checked.

Axle codes don't seem to make much sence on some 3rd gens, the best way to check is to look for the LSD sticker on the diff, or jack the back up and stin one wheel. If the other side wheel spins in the same direction, its got a LSD, if it spins in the opposite direction, its a normal open diff.

2/ I'd have thought it should, all the other trucks do, its probably under a wheel arch liner.
If the 4wd hasn't been engaged recently, it could stick. you need to check all the vacuum line and wiring to the t/case and axle. Have you given it a chance to select, ie, press the button and leave it along for a couple of minutes, just drive around and reverse on lock a bit and give all the bits a chance to get arrainged.

    3/ Dunno.

I have just changed the fluild in my LSD rear axle on my 3rd Gen.

Toyota recommend Castrol LS90 hypoid oil but only sell it in 25 litre drums. I wanted to stick to a hypoid oil & managed to find another company that does it in 1 litre containers.

Comma Hypoid SAE80W-90 API GL5 for LSD.

If your 3rd Gen has LSD, the oil must have the additive.

Bought from my local motor factors.

Isn't Stevo in Stockport, which I believe is near Warrington?

        He is highly recommended.

Thanks for the tips, especially one about spinning the rear wheels to check for an LSD.

Will ring Stevos in the morning.

Drove to the local ASDA (5mins away) with the 4wd switch engaged but the 4wd switch kept flashing all the way. HOWEVER, did notice a 'tightness' in the drivetrain or something when making sharp turns (to park) with the switch on. 'Tightness' dissapeared after I turned the switch off.

          WHATS THAT ABOUT????
