just a quick one. My 'red button' (called the ECT switch i believe) dosent seem to light up a switch onthe dash when pressed. how can i tell if its on or off? if i press it and no light comes on does that only mean the switch/bulb may be not workign rather than the actual function, ie the keeping the surf in lower gear ratio

On my 3rd Gen a light on the dash comes on when the ect button is switched on.....probably just a bulb gone.....I had my dash pod out of my vehicle in about 20 minutes.......so not to difficult to check if the bulb has gone.

On mine the red button is by the gear change lever and is to allow you to shift out of P without putting your foot on the brake.
The ECT button is just in front of the centre storage box and holds it in lower gears and has a light on the dash.

Pop the switch out and make sure that the multi plug is connected, somtimes they are disconneted in japan before being shipped.

On the 2nd gen 2.4s it's like 'cyclist' said 3.0TD could be 2nd or 3rd gen and could be different, i don't know.
