I had a similar problem with my 95 2nd gen. It would wander all over the place. I had a look, but couldn't see anything obvious, except that if I jacked one side up, and moved that sides wheel then there would be a bit of 'slack' before the other side moved. I took it down to my local Kwik Fit to have a look. The guys there had a play, saw the 'slack', and after looking a couple things over diagnosed the idler arm as being knackered. Got a new one off ebay, and 30 minutes with a socket set, hammer, grease gun, and pliers it was changed and all OK. Still need to get the tracking checked mind, I reckon it's out, and coupled with an off-road jaunt it put too much stress on the arm and buggered the ball-joint.

the 3rd gen runs on a steering rack, so no idler arm... i guess if the rack mounting bushes are worn then you'd get some play in the rack which could cause it?
play in ball joints? (hehehe... i've heard these can break and make the wheel fall off!!
nee nar nee nar, i'm a fire engine!

I have her booked into Tanvics in Grantham Thursday for a steering check so shud be able to tell if there are any worn parts.

It did feel a little better on AWD but not sure what that proves. I have no idea about mechanics so no idea what I am looking at...lol

If you want to see squirly handling, try driving along a road that has tram
            rails in it.
