  • Diff and Half-shafts

If you read the Weardale off-road thread sometime ago you will have noticed that I broke the Front Diff and Half-shafts. Got my hands on a 2nd hand lot hoping all will be okay....

Well the car has been rattling a lot of late, so thought the Bearings and Bronze Bushes needed changing so went ahead a paid for parts at £180+..decide to put the vehicle in the garage just to make sure...and bugga the Diff has failed and the half-shafts have been screwed [no off-roading done on them as yet]

Contacted Toyota to see pricing for NEW replacements:

    Diff...........£987.75 + vat
    Half-Shaft..£226.82 + vat

Seeing I need 2 half-shafts...thats gonna come to £1693.64 inc VAT and 3 weeks wait at least for the whole diff unit

I think i'm gonna sell the house and move into the vehicle its costing that much

Did they say what is wrong with the shafts? How can the shaft be buggered unless its bent? if so you got duff ones originally. or the CV's worn out, which can still be replaced.

Diffs can be rebuilt for less than the new price.

You need to find out what is actually wrong, not just let the garage say "you need a new one"

I wouldn't expect to pay more than £600 for a new set of diff gears, install kit and labour for installation.

is that for new casing an all ?

I would have shoved a locker in orginal casing - might have been cheaper too,
if it was just the internals of diff that were shot

Yeah, full casing...if it was the back diff that had gone I would have looked to put a locker in, but its the front and obviously will put more strain on the drivetrain.

hmmm, sexy, I love new parts!

Make sure you change the hub bushes, after spending all that on the shafts, it'll be silly to put them in worn bushes.

Yeah, got the bronze bushes, inner/outer bearings etc thinking it was them that had gone, so thankfully got them to put in. Just hope all fits well

At that cost they'll be staying clean for a little while [apart from rain splash of the road].

I think you need some mud and hill climbs to run it in, would have put in a thumbs up smilie but they're not working so this will have to do ;-)

Hope the fitting all goes well gaz.
