Lean out the door and see if the front prop is going round. But to be honest you'll know if its in 4wd the minute you try to turn a corner on tarmac.

If its going in when shifting in to low, but not on the button then its probably the soloniod on the back of the T/case. If its not going to 4wd properly on the stick or the button, then it could be the ADD mech on the axle.

Don't forget the 4wd ECU could be playing up, but unless the contacts are burnt, if it clicks its generaly OK.

Or could be just the bulb blown!!

Check the small diameter rubber vacuum hoses near the fuse boxes are all connected first.

Like Vince said, check all the vacuum pipes, there are a couple of solonoids next to each other on the inner wing, then the hoses on the t/case and the ones on the front axle (the ADD unit)

The low gear thing, the 4wd could still be busted, but you'll still be in Low range, just 2wd The lever mechanically works the gears to the rear wheels and the front prop in the t/case even if the ADD unit or ECU is foobarred.
