if its happening on full lock then its more than likely to be the bump stops needing a dab of grease on

Hi nope it's the cv's , as you probably know the best way to test a cv is by turning slowly on right and left locks (figure 8 style )and the sounds they make is unmistakeable.I had an older surf (89 2.4) and that had one gone exactly the same noise, shame I did'nt do it myself ,hang my head and have to say I got a local machanic to sort it.Good thought though storm shame it aint would be a whole lot cheaper

                  Thanks Slim,Bushwhacker
printed that off, It looks like its an old'un going by the pics, as my hubs are totally different (3L,, 93,,KZN130) I'm assuming then that the shaft is held into the outer cv joint by a spring clip. I guess it's all a case of tap it un see. I think I may do a picture gallery of this job could be useful to someone in the same predicament.

                    Hold up..hold up..

Are you sure its the CV's, there are lock stops front and back of each front lower wishbone. AND AND....there are also lock stops on the idler arm and the steering box arm..these are there for when you do really serious off-road stuff and land badly on left or right full lock..ie ram a rock/log/another Surf etc.

Have you tested the CV's in 4X4 mode...not so daft a question if you think about it, in all other states the front CV's just float about with no load on them. When I first got my Surf, I too thought the CV's were creamed until I got out and got under to investigate.

                    Have fun.

Hi yep done em in 4x4 mode and out of it the crunchy grateing noise does it all the time when on full lock, it will do it even when not quite on full lock.
So C V 's it is then agreed, all I need to know now is how to part shaft from cv ,but I guess once they are off all will be revealed( I hope)
                      thanks mechanic

                        A large hammer serperates them!

The are held on by a spring clip that sits on the end of the shaft. Alway try to fit a new one, as it often get damaged when knocking the CV off.

thanks for that, ya cant beat the good old hammer universal tool,
I have new clips so no problem there.
what do you reckon 2/3 hours to do the job (both sides) ? Sats the day weather permitting.
                          thanks again .
