I would say its not likley to be true. You can smell burned fluid that much IS true but if your box suddenly went from working to not working its very probably a simple problem.
You need to answer in detail.
Does it try to engage at all in ANY gear? Have you tried 4 wheel drive?I used to have a surf me!

Burnt smelling fluid is just that, did they even try flushing it out and changing it first, or just waded in with a "its bust mate, give us £1200"
You could have have worn out the clutch bands, if the fluid was really bad and the tranny has been working hard and got hot towing things, but its unusual.

Just a thought but is your hi-low lever (the small one on the right side) fully back in the H position, as if it's not fully engaged it might be allowing the transfer box to slip into neutral, thereby giving you zero drive. Also, have you checked there is sufficient oil in the transfer case?Mike G

Hi Tony,
In the Surf, unless you are driving a 3rd Gen (update your profile with your vehicle details so we know) the small lever should always be towards the rear to run the car in 2WD (i.e. 2H), although you can use the 4WD button on the small lever to put it into 4WD (i.e. 4H) on slippery surfaces. Never use a 1st or 2nd Gen on tarmac in 4WD (either 4H or 4L) or you will bugger the transmission as it doesn't have a centre diff, so once you turn the steering wheel you'll get transmission wind-up.
If it's not that, then it sounds like something in either the gearbox, or possibly the torque converter, is losing drive when it starts to heat up. Have you tried to drive the car for any distance whilst it's been doing this?
I had a problem years ago in an old Mk2 Escort Auto where the selector solenoids for 1st & reverse gave up half way to Norfolk from Bristol because the gearbox overheated. Managed to drive to Norfolk with just second and third gears, then after leaving it to cool down overnight it worked OK for the week we were over there but it had to be fixed when we got back. Could be you have something similar?
Have you tried putting the selector lever in 2 and seeing if it will continue to drive? If not, try it (presuming you can get the car back home if it loses drive) and if it works OK then it's probably the solenoids that need fixing.Last edited by Tallyman; 20 May 2006, 22:22.Mike G

that to me sounds like a solenoid issue. if i was you i would replace the solenoid which should be cheaper compared to a new tranny. a worn out solenoid can confuse the computer. I would also diconnect all batteries for a few minutes to reset the computer.
