  • Is there an original Radio CD player

Hi I've recently bought my Surf I was wondering if there was a full face Toyota Radio/cd player for it. What I have is a normal CD Radio normal size with what looks like a little black shelf underneath it. I hate the player and hate the little shelf. Could I pull out the player and the shelf and replace it with an original full size cd player to completely fill the cavity? and do they excist. By the way I paid £3700 for a mint condition 69k L reg 3.000cc diesel. Is this a good price?. Goes like a dream but What is that Power button for? the one infront of the gear levers? And What is the od or overdrive button for on the gear lever? and what is the idel up button for? and what happens when you press to get hard shock absorbers? and what's that for? Please someone answer these questions they're driving me nuts!. I can't read Japanese. HELP!

    WOW!!
well do a search for most of the questions and they will have been answered before a million times
first of all DONT run this car in 4 wd on normal tarmac roads! its not like the shogun or pajero etc and you may cause permanent damage!! (do a search under wind up) this is the first thing i found out on here before i even bought one
what you payed is what you payed and if you are happy with the price then it dont matter does it?
ive only had mine for a week now and i still aint stopped smiling (you get a free smile when you buy i think.its a japanese thing lol)
see ebay for double din radio
run with power button OFF for normal driving
run with o/d ON for normal driving
idle up button is good for cold mornings because it turns the idle up about 500 revs (bit like a choke i think)
when you press hard shocks it sets the shocks to hard so ride is not as smooth but for off roading you need them on hard
well thats the extent of my knowledge and if im wrong ill be told so !!
just one more thing.... watch for the concrete foot it hurts the fuel figures badley lol lol
at the end of the day................ it gets dark

Firstly, welcome to the nut house. They're all mad here except me, but I'm sane. Aren't I, Harvey?

      Re your queries:
      1. Why would you want to refit an original stereo? The Japanese market tuners only run from 70-90 MHz, so about the only station you will get int he UK is Radio 2. Even with a band expander fitted, the reception ain't that great, and the RDS systems won't work. You could fit a double DIN stereo if the little shelf really offends you, but you do need the wiring adaptor (ISO to DIN, IIRC) - this may already have been fitted if you have a UK stereo in there.

      2. Don't know if that's a good price or not, but someone else on here will, and will no doubt venture an opinion.

      3. The Power button alters the gearshift points on the auto box, to make the engine rev higher before changing up - a bit like a "Sport Mode".

      4. The O/D button on the gear selector prevents the gearbox from locking up into overdrive. I never use this, personally, but I'm sure it has it's uses.

      5. the Idle UP button increases the idling speed from 750-ish rpm to about 1100-ish. Good for warming up in cold weather, giving other people jump starts, and for fording rivers deeper than the exhaust pipe.

      6. The Hard/Soft button alters the damper settings on the original Toyota shocks - soft is standard, hard is, well, harder - for carrying heavy loads or towing. If your shocks have been replaced, this may not work.

      7. The infamous RED BUTTON..in front of the gear lever. Resisting firmly the temptation to be facetious: this allows you to take the gearbox out of Park when the engine is off. That's it. No ejector seat, no flux capacitor, but useful if you want to move the truck a bit without starting the engine.

Don't forget - if you have a query, you will get answers on here, but it may well have been answered many times before, so use the search button first!

When do we get to see some pictures of your truck, then?

      Regards
      Peter

Double din UK spec radio/cd players are out there. Mines got a tape cassette as well. My cd & tape didn't work on the original Jap spec unit when I got mine from the dealer, so he very kindly fitted a new Clarion radio/cd/tape for me. That was good, as if the cd & tape had worked I'd not have realised the radio part was $$$$ until after I'd taken delivery.

My Mondeo was a one and a half DIN! i.e. not as wide as a double DIN, and too wide to be a single DIN.

never measured one myself so it was just a thought, as i have seen a few ford ones lying around in the breakers.
