  • Custom snorkel build-up

    Hello,

I've never liked the fact of the Safari or Airflow snorkels coming by the fender and then going up by the A-Pilar. Why make it run over the fender if you can run it hidden?

I'm omitting the explanations of each part of the process, not a genius translating!

    Materials used are:

    - 1 70mm diameter per 1.5mm thickness inox steel pipe with a 50º bend
    - 1m of 70mm flexible tube
    - Some clasps
    - A bit of protection rubber profile
    - Some sheetmetal
    - Two metal screws
    - A Safari snorkel head

    Testing lengths

    Cutting a "bit" of metal

    Let's cut

    Better have to recut than...

    And the new paint scheme:

    Hope you like it,

    David

That looks nice and neat. You are a brave man. The result is certainly worth the effort. Nice job.
    It's only a hobby!

hehe, yeah, most 2.4's have them. it connects to the air intake pipe just before the 90 deg bend into the airfilter box....

They are longer and will get in the way of the snorkel, and no I don't know what it does! There is a drain pipe that comes out the bottem.

            Cool!
I've got this uncontrollable urge to go and whip the wings off my truck now to see what else I can find.

That thing is the intake resonator. It reduces the noise of the intake.

Have you ever try to drive the truck without the hose that connects the air filter with the rear-headlight intake?

You'll hear a noise similar to bubbling and the turbo whistling is a lot more audible.

PS: I don't mind if you copy my desing, if not I didn't put the pics!

I must agree..very nice and very neat.
And very very brave to go cutting up the Surf.

I'm sure we'll see a few more of these mods on the road (or off ) sooner or later, as your idea is certainly a lot tider and nicer than a black blob along the fender, which is the only thing putting me off a safari snorkel..maybe if they colour matched it.

Time to copy and paste the piccies(assuming you don't mind) for a later date.

                  No problem hehe.

I think the reason for the Safari going across the fender is for easier install...

You can always paint it with your truck's color...

Anyways Safaris are f*ck*ng expensive! This is why I choose to do it myself!

a fantastic job mate... just 1 question, is the 70mm diameter of the steel tubing the inside or outside measurment.

                        It's the external diameter.

The intake of the filter box is the same size, 70mm external.

I've not notice any decrease in power, maybe placebo effect but I'd say it accelerates faster in the driveway.

Replacement wings are cheap from Milners right...

BTW - anyone know where you'd get this: "A bit of protection rubber profile"

It's no more than a C shaped rubber profile. Cost me 0.75€/m...

I wanted to fill the wing-snorkel border with fiber but it will crack and also I'll loose the wing removing possibility, al least without messing it...
