  • Advice on different Clutch / Engine 'clatter'?

Read a number of posts, esp. the recent one by Panrixx on Manual Transmission/Clutch Noise. I've got something a little different:

My 92 3l surf is suddenly making a strange (unhealthy) 'clattering' noise up front when idling. I can't identify it by sight at the mo. On increasing revs, this disappears. Then when accelerator released and revs drop back down, it kicks in again. Depressing the clutch, I get the noise and I can actually feel the 'clattering' reverberations coming up through my foot...

    All levels are good, etc.

I've read about dual-mass flywheel in last posts and release bearings / thrust bearings, etc. but it doesn't seem the symptoms are the same here...

For a relative beginner, can anyone tell me from experience what is likely to be causing this?

I'm all ready to go to the garage, but a bit of knowledge is a very good thing!

    Thanks

Is your tickover set correctly? IIRC, should be aboout 750 for a manual... Low tickover will cause horrible rattles

Yep, tickover is set nicely at just over 750...

Really really stupid question but have you tried switching on the aircon (if you have it) according to roughtrax the aircon clutches can make that sort of rattle. Althought I wouldn't have thought you could feel that through the clutch

Thanks for that, but no it isn't the aircon.

Funny thing is, the noise has stopped... perhaps something got into the moving parts and caused a prob, I don't know. perhaps it is only temporary...

So I'm still off to the garage for an overhaul. Any other ideas would be welcome!

            Mikey,
Mine had a similar noise. It's there somedays and not others?
Does it sound like it's coming from the bellhousing at the back of the motor?
To start with mine would disappear if you put your foot on the clutch.
Finally mine sounded like there was a midget going hammer and tongs at the bellhousing from the inside.
When I stripped it down you could rock the flywheel side to side (read: it was stuffed).
don't want to get you panicked or anything but it's a thought...

              Hello Steve

Wellington, NZ eh?! The wife and I travelled round North and South Islands last year, an amazing 6 month trip in a Toyota Surf. Just had to get one when we got back home!

Thanks for the idea. Sound has gone and has not come back. Service due in a week. Will definitely bear that in mind and watch out for a recurrence.

Cheers, hope your summer is a good'un. Jan is miserable here!

Glad you enjoyed your trip 'down under', 6 months is a long trip!
You wouldn't think it was summer over here at the moment, gale force winds and rain this week, and cold.

dont know if its any help but my surf had same sort of problem. i removed gearbox and found one of the springs inside the flywheel itself broke up. i fitted a solid flywheel as fitted to brittish motors and its runnin like a dream
im not busy cos i did it right the first time

Hey, thanks for this. Problem disappeared as quickly as it came on - perhaps something got caught up in the assembly somewhere... But I've learnt a bit about flywheels as a result of this, handy for another day perchance!

                    Cheers

Aware it is some 12 months since you had the noise in the bell housing area. I note that it vanished and now seems all is O.K. I had exactly the same experience and did a tour of some 3,000 Ks. with out a problem. However the noise has returned much worse than before and I'm now in the process of having a new fly wheel and clutch fitted. Have you had the same result?

dont mean to put a downer on you but i had this same prob two weeks ago clatter coming from gearbox bell housing the noise seemed to fade a bit and i thought the same as you that it might have gone away but this was short lived as about 5-10 miles later the flywheel broke apart costing the best part of 700 queens heads to sort out i can tell you the best option is to replace the duelmass wheel with a solid type

                          Sailor

Interestingly enough, the noise is still around. When engaging first gear and easing off the clutch to get moving, I get a pretty grim noise which I can only assume is connected to clutch. Not probs as such, just a bit raucous and I am thinking again that something will need to be done.

                          Hope you get it sorted

                          Cheers

                              Update!

                              Yep

Finally had it with the noise - garage not experienced with Surfs - but got new solid flywheel from Roughtrax and got garage to call Roughtrax to discuss.

Result - new solid flywheel fitted, clutch adjusted as per Roughtrax advice - no more noise! Running lovely.

                              Cheers
