4wd to 2 wd

ok i know this might seem stupid but the cv joint prob i thought i had now looks to be a failed diff bearing as i have movement in the output flange offside on the diff . that being so and cos i need to keep using the surf will it be possible to remove the front prop , diff assembly and driveshafts and keep driving the car as 2wd - safely ? as i understand it the transfer case doesn't contain a diff and so drive should still be transmitted to the rear wheels . will the front hubs remain safe and lubricated . from what i have read it seems safe and possible .
if you say no , i will hire a car and take the vehicle off the road . appreciate the feedback even if i do end up looking stupid . andy
